John Cena turned heel at Elimination Chamber and even though more than a week has passed, if you're anything like me, you're still reeling from it. It will go down as one of the most shocking heel turns in pro wrestling history, and according to WWE, it should already be considered the most villainous turn of all time.
Even though Cena and The Rock have been missing from TV since the turn that shocked the world, WWE has attempted to fill the gap between turn and follow-up by ranking the 30 most villainous heel turns of all time. There are hundreds, if not thousands, to choose from - Big Show alone has turned heel about 50 times - so narrowing it down to just 30 would have been a gargantuan task.
With one of the most famous heel turns of all time taking place at Elimination Chamber, now is a great time to rank the most earth shattering ones. Among the turns WWE believes to be the most villainous is Shawn Michaels putting Marty Jannetty through the barber shop window, and Seth Rollins infamously turning on The Shield, the chairshot to Roman Reigns' back heard around the world when it connected.
I think most fans would agree that Cena's turn is more significant than that, especially with it still so fresh in our minds. It's a hard turn to compare to most others because of how synonymous Cena has been with being a babyface for 20 years. The one turn it can be directly compared to is one of the most famous moments in wrestling history, heel turn or otherwise - Hulk Hogan joining the nWo at Bash at the Beach.
Similar to Cena, Hogan had spent almost his entire career pandering to the fans and playing the good guy. His dropping of the leg on Randy Savage and siding with The Outsiders was truly one of the most shocking moments in wrestling. However, WWE believes it has finally outdone that moment, slotting it in at number two with Cena's turning taking its number one spot.
Part of the reason WWE will have placed Cena's turn above Hogan's is to generate chatter. Light a fire under older fans who refuse to believe anything that happened after the year 2001 could possibly be bettered in the present day, and those who love what WWE is doing with Cena. However, this is WWE we're talking about. A big part of putting Cena's turn at number one is because those in charge truly believe it was a more groundbreaking moment than the most significant thing WCW ever did.
