Bronson Reed, not Bron Breakker, should have been at the front of the queue to face CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night's Main Event. That's the opinion of a WWE personality who discussed Jey Uso winning a battle royal on RAW to challenge for the vacated title on November 1st.
Many expected to see Breakker become Punk's opponent Delta Center in Salt Lake City next month following The Vision's shock betrayal of Seth Rollins last week. General manager Adam Pearce announced that he stripped Rollins of the title due to a shoulder injury that has required surgery.
Breakker arrived on RAW with the title he stole from Rollins and was joined by Reed and WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman. But he reluctantly handed the gold over to Heyman to give to Pearce before the GM decided to remove The Vision duo from the battle royal to decide Punk's new SNME opponent.
This came as a shock, and it was Jey who prevailed, throwing out Jimmy Uso despite his twin brother helping him stay in the match. But some were left scratching their heads as to why WWE didn't go with Breakker as Punk's opponent given the ongoing storyline.
Sam Roberts acknowledged this but also made the point that his tag partner, Reed, was just as worthy. He said on RAW Recap:
"I could easily argue that Bronson Reed is the one who is deserving of the title shot because Bron Breakker, while he did create this moment and take out Seth Rollins, Bronson Reed's the one who pinned Roman Reigns.
Reed pulled off a career-making win over Reigns at Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia on October 11th, pinning the OTC in a street fight. He became just the second man to score a pinfall victory over the former Undisputed WWE Champion in a one-on-one match this decade, following Cody Rhodes' WrestleMania 40 win.
Roberts added:
"Ultimately, the last time that Bronson Reed was in the ring, he did something very few people have done. I guess nobody else has taken his (Reigns) shoes. But he pinned him, and to me, you're immediately to the top of the ladder."
Reed was named as one of the participants in the battle royal until Pearce decided to remove him and Breakker due to their mischief. Even Heyman pleading with the RAW GM proved ineffective, and the Oracle was left trying to galvanise his two troops by suggesting world titles are in their future.
While most eyes have been on Breakker following The Vision's betrayal of Rollins, many are singing the praises of Reed who has grown into one of the top heels in WWE. It all started last year when he hit Rollins with six Tsunamis in a memorable RAW moment that helped kickstart his surge to the top of the card.
Reed has since faced Rollins, albeit losing at Crown Jewel last year, before picking up the biggest win of his career against Reigns at the same PLE this year. He seems to be just as trusted to be a success in the main event scene as Breakker and his former faction leader spoke glowingly earlier this month.
Rollins responded to Reed defeating Reigns when he appeared on the Crown Jewel post-show:
"Bronson Reed is who I thought he was. There is a reason I recruited him into The Vision. He put me out. Six Tsunamis. Put me on the shelf. I saw in him not just the ability but the killer instinct. He wanted to get to the next level. He targeted me. As much as we went to war. I respect that. Tonight, what he did to Roman Reigns, pinning his shoulders to the mat."
The 37-year-old replicated Rollins' exploits against Reigns when he shocked the Tribal Chief, thanks in part to Jey Uso's inadvertent spear. The Visionary added:
"There are not many people who could say they pinned Roman Reigns. I’m one of them, and now, Bronson Reed is another, and I’m so proud of him and this is what The Vision is for—to take the future of this company and give it the pedestal it deserves."
It seems WWE are going to let the dust settle before moving Breakker onto the world title scene, but Reed may not be far behind. There is a story to be told way down the line, in which he similarly feels like an afterthought, as the unpredictable badass suggested was behind their decision to turn on Rollins.
