WWE RAW on Netflix 9/22 Results: The Kabuki Warriors’ Vicious Attack & Jey Uso Wants What?

RAW on Netflix was live from Evansville, Indiana, at the Ford Center following this weekend’s “Wrestlepalooza” taking place in nearby Indianapolis (a roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive). The oddly named PLE was an impromptu event created to help launch ESPN’s new app/partnership with WWE that will be the destination for all U.S. PLEs.

The show was not received very well by both fans and journalists, which suggested the event had a “one-and-done” feel—meaning the storylines in the works are put on hold to tell a story that will only matter for the one show.

However, tonight’s RAW felt like a response to that criticism as the storylines were more nuanced and creative leaning into the ‘long-term booking’ that surrounded RAW and Rollins post-Mania. Fans are concerned that the next PLE will feature the same ‘one-night only’ booking for Crown Jewel in Perth, a format typically reserved for Saudi until the company supplemented next year’s Royal Rumble and WrestleMania events.

Rhodes-Rollins Run It Back, Crowning A Crown Jewel Champ At Crown Jewel (Enough to make it matter?)

Cody Rhodes was first out tonight following his successful title defense against Drew McIntyre at this weekend’s Wrestlepalooza—officially launching the ‘ESPN era’ of WWE as the face of the company retained the richest prize in sports entertainment in the main event slot.

Cody was barely on the mic before Rollins made his way out to the ring to confront his opponent two weeks from Saturday at Crown Jewel in Perth. Rollins, fresh off the loss he and his wife Becky Lynch suffered this weekend at the hands of AJ Lee and her husband CM Punk. He came out tonight, and it almost felt like a mini reset, or a re-reset, as he was once again centerstage surrounded by his ‘Vision.’

After weeks of separate bookings within the faction, many questioned whether creative would move forward with ‘The Vision’ concept as it was initially presented, or if maybe inserting Brock Lesnar into the mix could revamp a story that seemed all but abandoned in the writing room.

But tonight was just what Seth needed, and though the crowd chanted for Punk, Rollins made it a point to go out and establish this storyline with not much time left until fight night. Reestablishing the Rhodes/Rollins feud, the one that helped establish Cody’s place in the company upon his return, is no easy task—after all, what is left to say about a story that felt adequately told?

However, both men are now in different places than when they last faced off, especially Cody, and the need for a more centralized narrative has never been more important, particularly for Seth.

“Either you don’t think I’m good enough or you don’t think I’m as good as you,” Rollins said on the mic as he used his promo to completely shift the perceived storyline on this feud. What fans expected to be a ‘champion vs champion’ storyline on a “one-and-done” show built on a program that mostly plays into their past now feels like a true integrated plot.

“The Vision isn’t just a group of people, the vision is an idea of what the future of this industry looks like, and it runs through me, Rollins said before claiming that he, not Cody, was the “tip of that spear.”

This was a much-needed shift back into the main story that Rollins and ‘The Vision’ faction (along with Heyman) had been telling prior to the AJ Lee distraction. Now, with Lee likely headed into an IC championship feud with Becky, it frees up Seth to reestablish his place on RAW and within his group. Instead of a basic face/heel story from today’s preeminent baby face and generational heel in Seth, WWE is providing a more nuanced set of stakes because if Seth is fighting against all of the ‘change’ going on in the company at a time when the company’s brass is trying to sell us on how great it is that the product is more commercial. With Cody as the ‘face’ of all of this, he would clearly be seen by Seth as the bad guy in his story—a cog in the wheel of this ever-present TKO machine.

In this contest, who is the actual ‘bad guy’ in a story with everyone’s favorite good guy?

Dom Gets Dominated

With Rusev intent on taking the Intercontinental title, Dom Mysterio decided it was time to come to Finn and the rest of The Judgement Day to get some assistance. Finn gave Dom a hard time and even suggested that the double champ (IC and TRIPLE A MEGA) ask ‘his friend’ El Grande Americano. The masked Luchadore, currently being portrayed by three different superstars (Ludwig Kaiser is the best and most consistent behind the mask), has been a wedge between Dom and TJD.

El Grande Americano is working in Mexico for the week, but Finn was not interested in helping regardless. So, Dom hustled the help out of Judgement Day’s JD McDonagh to take on Rusev, and after he first relented, he agreed to help for the sake of the faction (and not Dom)—to his surprise, Dom had already had the match made official through GM Pearce.

JD McDonaugh vs. Rusev

Rusev went over in this one, though JD outperformed as usual. In the match’s finale, Rusev locked on the ‘Cobra Clutch’ and Dom jumped onto the apron as if he was going to help, but the IC champ reconsidered. JD eventually tapped, and Finn ran in to break up the submission hold that Rusev is known to hold post-match. Finn yelled at Dom for not jumping in, and Dom was only helpful after the Rusev threat was neutralized.

Stephanie Vaquer Gets Her Flowers

Adam Pearce introduced RAW’s newest women’s champ, Stephanie Vaquer, fresh off her win over Iyo Sky to claim the vacant title after Naomi relinquished due to her recent pregnancy. Steph delivered the bilingual promo, and it was announced that Steph will face the winner of this Friday’s triple threat match between champion Tiffany Stratton and both Jade Cargill and Nia Jax.

Steph will represent the RAW side of the women’s title against one of the three aforementioned superstars at Crown Jewel in Perth to decide the women’s ‘Crown Jewel Champion.’

Later in the backstage area, Nikki Bella was seen congratulating Stephanie before Rhea entered the frame and extended the same courtesy. Eventually, Auska budged her way into the segment to remind all of them to ‘stay away from Iyo Sky.’ The obsession is getting weird, and Rhea had enough, leading her to challenge Auska to a one-on-one match.

Rhea Ripley vs. Auska

Before the match, Rhea Ripley attempted to have the awkward conversation with Iyo Sky and the determent she believes Auska presents to her. But Sky was adamant that she would not be where she is today with Auska, and the convo did not go the way Rhea had hoped.

The women received the main event spot on the night, rightfully so, and they made sure not to ‘waste the position.’ They put on a great match that helped to bookend a night of great action, and from Rhea catching Auska with the drop kick off the top turnbuckle to Auska’s well-timed and accurate striking, they put on a great show.

That said, the finish was not so clean as Rhea was forced to deal with Kairi Sane’s interference, but she was able to hold on long enough to roll up Auska for the win. Rhea got the win, which positioned her for a post-match beatdown. Auska forced Sane to land the elbow she missed during the actual match, and that is when Iyo Sky ran down to make the save.

Sky got Auska to restrain herself, but it was only so that she would lower her guard long enough to turn on her longtime friend and protégé. Rhea took the green mist for her efforts as Sky was beaten down by both Auska and Sane (Kabuki Warriors) to close out RAW.

Penta & War Raiders vs. The New Day w/Waller

It was the first action of the night, and it was a banger. The powerhouse pairing with Penta made for a formidable team while The New Day kept things competitive. The match was the perfect length with the picture-perfect finish as Penta landed a ‘Mexican Destroyer’ from the middle turnbuckle on Waller, who looked like his soul left his body for just a moment. Waller was fine post-match, but the move was good enough to keep him down for the three-count as the face team picked up the “dub.”

Say Jey, Whatta Ya Say? Oh… Still Yeet…

The Jey Uso saga continues to get stranger and stranger by way of his booking. The ‘main event’ experiment is officially over, but the recent development of reuniting with his twin brother Jimmy to reform The USOs also feels like it never began. Jey and Jimmy have had a confrontational relationship over the past several weeks, with LA Knight as the crux of their disagreements.

Jimmy went to Jey to explain he had a ‘game plan’ for how to handle ‘The Vision’ following their loss, but when he went to Pearce to make the tag team booking, he found out that Jey had already booked himself for a one-on-one match with LA Knight who Jey blamed for their loss as he was the referee for Saturday’s contest.

Jey beat Knight in singles action, capitalizing on the interference provided by Breakker and Reed, taking direction from Heyman. Jey picked up the victory and Yeeted straight to the curtain, but before going to the back, Jimmy confronted him yet again before he (alone) ran down to the ring to prevent the post-match beatdown on Knight.

After everything that Jey has gone through, it appears as though he is finding his ‘heel side,’ and the call he made last week may have actually been to someone in ‘The Vision,’ and the way that Heyman prevented Breakker from attacking Jimmy, it could be ‘The Wiseman’s’ advice that Jey is once again tapped into.

Other Tidbits/In-Ring Action

Bayley faced off with Roxanne Perez of The Judgment Day in singles action (sort of). Bayley picked up the win and continued to push the dueling character narrative we’ve seen in video vignettes and in-person last week. She asked Lyra to accompany her to ringside, and Lyra did her best to aid Bayley from the outside interference typical of a Judgement Day match. Bayley went off on Lyra after the match, and this storyline continues to develop, though it may be time to hit the next gear.
