WWE may have kicked off an intriguing storyline heading into WarGames. During Friday's episode of SmackDown, the women's team that was going to seemingly feature Rhea Riply, Iyo Sky, Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair and another competitor lost Flair when she walked away from the team, refusing to work with Ripley. However, it's unlikely this is a simple storyline set up so that two more competitors could be added to the group.

The unexpected drama might be laying the groundwork for a deeper emotional arc involving Flair and a further attempt to make her a beloved babyface.
Rhea Ripley and IYO Sky opened the show by announcing Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair as their partners. But before Ripley could even get rolling, Charlotte spoke up and said she wasn’t doing this. She told Ripley she didn’t like her, didn’t trust her, and flat-out called her a “snake.” Flair then walked out on the team — not in anger, but with a calm demeanor that left fans thinking they should boo Flair, but also slightly confused.
Charlotte’s refusal to join the WarGames team wasn’t presented as heel turn. It felt like WWE was addressing the backstory that is Flair and Ripley's history, but also leaving the door open for a serious moment of redemption. When she addressed Alexa Bliss directly, Flair said she still loved Alexa, supported her, and respected her choice to compete — she simply couldn’t fight beside Ripley.
This line changed everything.
Charlotte may eventually return not for Ripley’s sake, but for Alexa’s. Fans online immediately picked up on this, suggesting that as the team tries to find another partner, they'll be outnumbers and Flair will eventually choose loyalty to Bliss over animosity toward Ripley. That’s a character direction Flair hasn’t had in years.
Later in the show, fans saw the first tease that this group is going to need saving. Alexa revealed Charlotte wasn’t responding to messages. Moments after, Ripley, Bliss, and IYO were attacked backstage by The Kabuki Warriors, Lash Legend, and Nia Jax — a classic WWE tactic to highlight the consequences of a missing team member.
WWE appears to be building toward a moment where Charlotte has to make a choice. This isn’t about mending fences with Ripley — at least not yet. It’s about whether her loyalty to Alexa Bliss is strong enough to push her into the match, forcing her to confront someone she can’t stand for the sake of someone she loves.
If that’s the payoff, WWE may be crafting one of its most compelling WarGames arcs to date — with Flair becoming a bigger babyface at the heart of it all.
