WWE SmackDown Creative Team Changes: Road Dogg to Remain Head

  • WWE adding staff to SmackDown's creative team while keeping Road Dogg as head.
  • Fans doubt improvements if Road Dogg stays, blaming past creative missteps.
  • SmackDown ratings plunged to 1.03M (lowest since 2023); demo rating hit 0.23.

WWE is reportedly going to be making some changes to its SmackDown brand, and it's not about its roster. It appears that there will be some creative changes made backstage.

WWE Changing Up Its Creative Team

In the latest exclusive report from BodySlam.net via WrestlePurists, sources indicated to the outlet that WWE is undergoing creative changes to their team to “overall improve the product.” Per the report, Road Dogg will continue to be the head of creative for the blue brand, but there are going to be “additions to the team.”

The thought behind these changes is to make the brand “more enjoyable moving forward.” It’s no secret that the brand is struggling, and it’s best if WWE does something about it now, before it's too late. Though, according to the comments below from social media, it might be too late.

One person wrote:

“‘Road Dogg will continue to be head of creative for SmackDown.’” It doesn’t matter who you bring in, nothing will change.”

Another fan said:

“All these roles change and adjust, yet the main issue is Road Dogg being head of creative. He's been producing garbage for years.”

While another wrote:

“It won't improve that much if Road Dogg is still head of creative for SmackDown. You saw how terrible the quality of the show was years ago when he was in the same position, should be no surprise that the quality dipped as soon as he took the role in 2025.”

So it’s safe to say that the consensus from fans is that the problem is Road Dogg still being in control of what happens on the show. Is it because he's Triple H's friend, or maybe no one else wants the responsibility?

Last Week’s SmackDown Ratings Were Terrible

Sol Ruca & Zaria WWE SmackDown October 2025

According to F4Wonline, last Friday’s WWE SmackDown episode, which was on October 3, 2025, averaged 1.03 million viewers on the USA Network. It’s down 19 percent from the previous week. Not only is it down from the previous week, but it broke some unfortunate records.

The show marks the lowest audience total since SmackDown's return to the USA Network, and it’s the lowest overall number for SmackDown since November 29, 2023. It only gets worse for the episode. It finished third on cable with a 0.23 rating in the 18-49 key demographic. That’s down, according to the outlet, 34.3 percent from the last episode.

What happened during last week’s episode? Sami Zayn retained the United States Title against Aleister Black, NXT stars Zaria and Sol Ruca defeated Chelsea Green and Alba Fyre, and Rey Fenix and Je’Von Evans defeated Los Garzas. The main event saw The Vision’s Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker defeat Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton. Maybe Orton needs to turn heel and feud with Rhodes to get audiences interested in the blue brand again.
