Seth Rollins and CM Punk’s issues have been a part of World Wrestling Entertainment since the Second City Saint returned. Rollins has not been shy about his hatred for CM Punk, and he has done everything in his power to make Punk’s life a living hell. At every turn, Seth Rollins has thwarted Punk’s attempt at capturing the World Championship, with Clash in Paris being the latest chapter.
Seth Rollins using his wife, Becky Lynch, to get him the victory makes sense, but it also opens the door for a myriad of possibilities. Now that Lynch has sided with her hubby, it begs the question of how CM Punk will respond. There are plenty of female wrestlers who he could enlist to help him in his battle against WWE’s power couple. Below, we will explore the possible partners for CM Punk.
We can start with the elephant in the room. Since CM Punk returned, the discussion has been heated over whether his real-life partner, AJ Lee, would join him. Lee was a pivotal part of the WWE’s women’s division and, frankly, its most talented wrestler. She was ahead of her time, making women’s wrestling a more serious part of the WWE product.
Fans have wanted AJ Lee to return for a while now, and while she has been tentative about a return to wrestling, Clash in Paris may have given her a reason. Having her return to side with her husband against the pairing of Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch checks just about every box one can imagine. It gives WWE a huge return to promote and a big-time match to produce. AJ Lee would be the top choice for just about every person in wrestling.
If CM Punk is looking for someone to have his back in the war against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, Bayley could be his best option. She is in the middle of some intriguing character development at the moment. It’s resembling a turn of sorts, reverting to her heel gimmick. She’s getting her edge back, and she could use that to help CM Punk’s very personal feud.
There is also the caveat that Becky Lynch and Bayley have been at each other’s throats for a while now. It was Lynch who attacked Bayley before WrestleMania and took her spot. Since then, Bayley has been on a path of revenge, trying to cost Lynch her Intercontinental Championship on multiple occasions. It seems the perfect fit to have her side with CM Punk and take down the reigning World Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champions.
Looking at things from a recency bias angle, it would make sense for WWE to put CM Punk and Nikki Bella together. They haven’t been linked in the past or present, but they are both dealing with issues from Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch. Judging from the way Becky Lynch got her victory over Nikki Bella, their problems are far from over. It’s an easy fit to throw her and Punk together.
Coming out of Clash in Paris, these four wrestlers are going to be at each other’s throats. Yes, there might be more attractive options for WWE, but this would be the safest one. The feud is already off and running, and it would be easy to match these four up. It would provide the world with a fresh matchup, but one that would lack the intensity typically seen with other partners.
The issues between CM Punk and Seth Rollins extend beyond the ring. WWE has done a great job of weaving real-life tensions into the wrestling world. It has blurred the line between reality and fiction, and if they wish to double down, there is a wrestler who would be perfect.
Cora Jade isn’t currently on the WWE roster, and many people throw the blame for that on Becky Lynch’s shoulders. There was a tiff on social media between Jade and Lynch at the beginning of the year that some believed led to her release. Bringing her back to stand with CM Punk would set the wrestling world on fire. WWE would be wise to blur the reality of both storylines, giving them a huge program to promote. The fans would love it, and the promos would be phenomenal.
Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch were involved in a great summer feud this year. Their matches got better every time, and it helped establish Valkyria as a star. Yes, it may not have ended the way many would have wanted, but the journey is the more important story. What’s also important is that the Lyra Valkyria didn’t lose the feud straight up. Bayley had a lot to do with her staring at the lights in her and Lynch’s final match.
Lyra has been away from programming for long enough that her return would be a great surprise. She has built-in issues with Lynch and an axe to grind. CM Punk would be wise to bring in a partner who has that fire to get the best of The Man. It would also give Lyra Valkyria an important return feud to sink her teeth into.
