WWE is in a weird place. There are a handful of active legends carrying most of the major storylines and a smaller group of up-and-comers trying to find their footing. It's a transitional era and the current list of champions reflect this period of movement.
That said, there's still varying levels of quality to each championship reign. Some wrestlers have had non-descript reigns that many fans wish would come to an end. Others have elevated their respective straps. Here's my ranking of every WWE champion from worst to best.
Lexis King has the look and the pedigree, but his booking still reads more like a character experiment than a finished product. The crowd reactions are inconsistent and the WWE Speed title is a bit of a bad idea, overall. He's getting TV time, but the creative team hasn't given him a defining program.
Wren's positioning is all about potential, not presence. She has real talent and her current placement here is based more on the frailty of the Speed championship.
WWE clearly views her as a project worth developing, but the title hasn't anchored a division or a show, and her feuds have played more like extended tryouts than meaningful programs.
Stacks only lands above the Speed champions because of experience and his affiliation with Tony D'Angelo. He still needs to find a way to set himself apart. The character work is fun, but the Heritage Classic title isn't essential to the show.
Respectfully, this title reign is a mess. Yes, they're defending the belts somewhat regularly, but the matches are stale and Brie and Paige have no chemistry. Brie always looks like she's obligated to do something that she doens't want to do and Paige looks ready to move on to something as a singles performer.
As a nostalgia-driven team, Brie and Paige are leaning on name value more than elevating the division. The entrances draw big reactions, but creative has booked the reign as a tribute run rather than the backbone of a modern women's tag scene.
After a lackluster run as the WWE Women's Champion, Tiffany is having an even more dull run as the women's US champion.
She's over; the belt isn't quite there yet. Right now the booking makes the title feel like an accessory rather than a prize elevated by her holding it.
Swipe Right's NXT Tag Team Title run is heavy on aesthetics and sports-entertainment segments, lighter on defining matches. The act is entertaining and these guys are super athletic. Myka Lockwood is a stellar henchwoman and further elevates the faction.
I believe they have real potential, which is why I have them higher than other more established stars.
This was a cute act early, but now it is time for something different with the tag titles.
Priest carries world-title aura and R-Truth is eternally over, but as a pairing their odd couple has run its course.
Paxley has the goods. She is like a cross between Alexa Bliss and Paige and she is building a strong legion of fans. This is just the beginning as she is one of the most dynamic performers in NXT.
Borne has physical ability that is so eerily similar to Randy Orton, it's crazy. He has the look and his real-life journey that has seen him shine despite being deaf makes him an absolute superstar.
He is one of the best young stars in NXT and it is only a matter of time before he becomes NXT champion.
Vice has genuine star presence and undeniable crossover appeal. She has worked extremely hard to hone her in-ring skills and now she is a complete performer. She's one major feud away from jumping several spots.
Tony D'Angelo's character evolution landed him as NXT Champion and pretty high on this list overall.
His power and look are undeniable and he is capable of pulling off excellent character work.
The Vision are built as heat magnets. Logan Paul brings crossover star power, Theory handles the week-to-week heavy lifting, and the World Tag Team Title reign gives the belts mainstream visibility. I love this team, though I'd like to see Theory elevated a little.
Penta should probably be lower on this list, I admit. He's here because he rarely has a disappointing match, but he is yet to prove he can do his part to sustain a feud.
Still, he is the Intercontinental Champion and he won an epic multi-man match to retain at WrestleMania 42. However, D'Angelo, Vice and Paxley are nipping at his heels.
Trick is one of WWE's breakout acts, and creative has booked the United States Title as his launchpad. I'd like to see more defenses and I can't wait for him and Carmelo Hayes to work together. As it is, Trick is a step away from getting a little stagnant.
Becky isn't as likable these days and that's by design. I think she is doing some of her best character work and doing her part in providing an opportunity for young stars like Sol Ruca to shine.
Lynch has legitimized the IC title and she's still going. However, I do expect Sol Ruca to dethrone her at some point pretty soon.
Rhea is Rhea and that's why she's here. However. she needs another strong match with Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy to truly solidify this spot. It's good she is away from Raw as that cupboard had gone bare.
Morgan continues to deliver excellent character work and violent, unhinged in-ring performances. She needs another rival for her title soon. Stephanie Vaquer's injury has her out of the picture and Liv is doing enough to keep the shine on the title.
Cody is really good at his job. No matter how tired fans may be of his schtick, he still over delivers on the mic and in the ring. Does Gunther dethrone him at Clash in Italy? It's very possible. And if he does, we might have a new No. 1.
Roman Reigns is the OTC in every way in WWE. He may be set to put his cousin Jacob Fatu over, in which case, we'll see a different No. 1 for sure after Clash in Italy. As it is, Reigns is still the straw that stirs the proverbial drink.
The current champion picture says everything about where WWE's focus sits right now. The legends on top are anchoring the product while a deep bench of NXT prospects fights for the spotlight. How quickly that next wave climbs this list will define the company's next era.
