Goldust is considered one of the most entertaining and eccentric characters in WWE history. The alter ego of Dustin Rhodes left a mark on every opponent and fan who was able to witness him in all of his glory. From multiple runs with the Intercontinental Championship to his partnerships with Marlena, Booker T and Cody Rhodes, there were so many moments and segments that are fondly remembered from the golden performer. Despite everything fans have seen from Rhodes, there are still some things that you might not remember or recall from his run under the gold facepaint. Here are 10 facts about Goldust that you may not know.

1. Vince McMahon & Bruce Prichard Came Up With The Goldust Character

In 1995, Dustin Rhodes got a phone call from Bruce Prichard who said that he and Vince McMahon wanted to pitch a character for him in WWF. This would be an "androgynous" gimmick that would become Goldust. The character would garner plenty of criticism and controversy in the New Generation Era, but would become one of the personalities that helped evolve the promotion into the more edgy Attitude Era.

2. He Debuted In WWE As Dustin Rhodes First

For many wrestling fans, their first introduction to Dustin Rhodes as a performer was the Goldust character. However, Rhodes made his WWE/WWF debut alongside his father Dusty Rhodes in a tag team match against The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase and Virgil at the 1991 Royal Rumble. The duo came up short that night, but Dustin went on to find more success in WCW following this initial run in WWF.

3. He Did Not Know What "Androgynous" Meant

When Bruce Prichard and Vince McMahon pitched the "androgynous" persona that was Goldust, Dustin Rhodes immediately agreed. However, he would reveal that he had no clue what the word meant until after that phone call when he looked it up in the dictionary. Rhodes had no idea that he was agreeing to play an indetermined gender-type role. After learning this, he wanted to mold Goldust through his own creative means, which led to the character that became famous in WWF.

4. He Credits Savio Vega For Pushing The Boundary With His Character

Many fans remember Savio Vega for his run in WWF/WWE in the 1990's. Vega is someone who is a seasoned veteran that helped many young stars during his time with the promotion. One such star is Goldust. Dustin Rhodes credits Savio for helping him push the boundaries of what Goldust could be. In an interview with AEW Unrestricted, Dustin recalled a match at Madison Square Garden the two had where Vega encouraged him to do a spot that played on the fans' opinions at the time. He said:
"Savio Vega is Puerto Rican so talks me into it. I'm nervous as s***. We go out there. We start wrestling and having our match. I was the Intercontinental Champion at the time. He locks up with me, and he says, 'OK, we're going to do it now.' So all it was was me locking up going behind him rubbing up and down his chest and kind of grazing over his privates down downstairs, and then he pushes away and chases me and I take a powder. That's it. That was it."

5. He Left The Building Early After Famous Ahmed Johnson Kissing Segment

One of the most famous segments that further pushed the wild side of Goldust was when he kissed Ahmed Johnson on the May 27, 1996 episode of WWE Raw. Dustin Rhodes originally told Johnson that he would put his hand over his mouth, but planted his lips on Ahmed's as a joke. Johnson revealed that Goldust left the arena early after being afraid Ahmed would overreact. In an interview with the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, he said:
""After we got done, it was funny, he thought I was really mad, so he left the arena. He got in the car and left without even taking his makeup or nothing off. He was like, 'Hold on, you're not p****d are you?' I'm like, 'No, man, it's part of the gimmick. I understand.' Then we were cool with it."

6. Marlena Was Scheduled To Turn On Him In 1997

One of the more significant elements of the Goldust character was his manager Marlena. Played by Dustin's real-life wife at the time, Terri Runnels, the two had instant chemistry on-screen and made the ambiguity of his character that much more compelling. In 1997, Goldust feuded with Brian Pillman in a heated rivalry. At In Your House: Ground Zero, Pillman beat Goldust to get Marlena as his personal slave for 30 days. In a 2018 interview with Sportskeeda, Terri revealed the culmination of the rivalry was supposed to see Marlena align with Pillman prior to Brian's untimely passing.
“So Dustin lost. I go with Pillman for a month. When I came back, we were going to renew our vows in the ring. When it was time for someone to object, Pillman was going to come out. They were going to get in a melee. It was going to end up with me basically covering Pillman and protecting him from Dustin saying, “After that thirty days, I love him.” I was going to leave Dustin for Pillman. It would have gone for a while, and it would have been great."

7. Lance Storm Convinced WWE Management To Have Goldust & Booker T Win Tag Team Titles

One of the most popular angles of Goldust's entire WWE run was his pairing with Booker T. The two had an odd couple partnership that became one of the most endearing tandems of the 2000's. In 2020, former WWE star Lance Storm revealed that the duo's one and only WWE Tag Team Title win at Armaggedon 2002 wasn't originally meant to be until he had a finish changed. Storm took to Twitter and revealed:
"WIlliam Regal & I were originally booked to win this match. I suggested Booker & Goldust win instead because they had so many failed title shots. I thought failing again would hurt them too much. Others in the match agreed and we talked the office into changing the finish. "
The match was a four-way that saw Goldust and Booker T defeat Storm and William Regal, The Dudley Boys and Chris Jericho and Christian to win the gold.

8. He Was Sheamus' Mentor At The Start Of His WWE Career

When Sheamus debuted on WWE main programming, it was on the ECW brand. His first rivalry on the brand was against Goldust. This was used to help "The Celtic Warrior" get his footing early in his career and Dustin Rhodes was tasked with taking care of him in the ring. Goldust revealed in an interview with In The Ring that this was a pet project for him. This is something that Rhodes took pride in after Sheamus went on to become WWE Champion and a stalwart for the company.

9. Pitched "Backlot Brawl" Against Cody Rhodes

One of Goldust's most talked about bouts was his WrestleMania 12 "Hollywood Backlot Brawl" against Rowdy Roddy Piper. This infamous encounter has not aged well with because of its controversial subject matter, but it has been looked back on fondly by Dustin Rhodes as a match that set the groundwork for the memorable character. In 2013, Dustin pitched a redo of the "Backlot Brawl" against his brother Cody Rhodes. While Cody agreed with the idea, WWE and Vince McMahon did not and thus the match never happened.

10. WWE Prohibited Him From Attending First ALL IN Event

In 2018, Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks promoted the biggest independent wrestling show ever with the first All In event from Chicago. With 10,000-plus fans in attendance, the show was a history making night that shook the foundations of the wrestling business. Cody's brother Dustin Rhodes, who wrestled for WWE as Goldust at the time, wanted to be there, but was denied. In an interview with Sports Guys Talk Wrestling in 2018, Dustin revealed that WWE's office prohibited him from going.
“Man, what an awesome night that was. I mean, it was incredible and me and Cody had talked a couple weeks before that leading up to the deal and he wanted me to be there so so bad and I wanted to be there more than anything. I was told by my office I could not go. It sucks. I wanted to be there more than anything.”
The All In show would set the stage for the arrival of AEW in 2019, which Dustin Rhodes signed for just months after the inception and wrestled Cody in a high profile bout at their first event, Double Or Nothing 2019.

Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Makes Direct Statement About Mason Rudolph's Spot On QB Depth Chart

The Pittsburgh Steelers have quite an interesting quarterback room for the 2025 season. Of course, all the focus is truly on Aaron Rodgers and what he can bring to the team at this stage in his career. Behind him, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph serving as the primary backup. Skylar Thompson and Will Howard are competing for the third spot on the depth chart, but unfortunately for Howard, an injury has slowed his progress. Thompson took advantage of the opportunity, performing well in the first preseason game and possibly reclaiming the QB3 role. Before his injury, Howard had previously moved ahead of Thompson in the competition. Former teammate of Rudolph, Ben Roethlisberger, recently shared his honest thoughts about the veteran quarterback’s performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Roethlisberger, who spent years with Rudolph during his time in Pittsburgh, had a unique perspective on how his former understudy handled the game. While Roethlisberger acknowledged there were some areas where Rudolph could improve, he also praised his composure, decision-making, and ability to move the offense when needed. Roethlisberger discussed Rudolph’s performance on his Footbahlin podcast, noting that the veteran looked confident and in control despite limited opportunities. "You know I thought Mason [Rudolph] played really well," Roethlisberger said on his podcast. "I thought he did exactly what you would hope to see from your backup quarterback. He went out there I think, he solidified himself… as the two." He pointed out that Rudolph’s familiarity with the Steelers’ system allows him to step in without disrupting the flow of the offense. With Rodgers leading the way, Rudolph providing a steady backup presence, and the QB3 competition between Thompson and Howard continuing, the Steelers’ quarterback depth will be a storyline worth following as the 2025 season approaches. "Let’s see how he does this week and the next week," Roethlisberger said. "I thought he played really well. I thought he was efficient with the ball. He threw the ball down the field. As a team, you like seeing that because that gives you confidence going into the season that if something were to happen one game for Aaron… you have a guy that you feel confident who could go in there. Same thing when we had Charlie Batch, you had Bruce Gradkowski, you had Byron Leftwich, you had Dennis Dixon and Josh Dobbs. Any of those guys. You just feel confident he can go in and just get it done for you." Roethlisberger had high praise for Rudolph, and hearing him mention him alongside names like Charlie Batch shows he has faith in Rudolph’s ability to be a reliable backup in Pittsburgh. There is a strong argument that Rudolph is one of the most dependable backup quarterbacks in the NFL, which is a significant asset for the Steelers in the 2025 season. Steelers' Mason Rudolph Has Great Preseason Game Versus Jaguars Rudolph only attempted 10 passes on Saturday night against the Jaguars, but completed 90 percent of them. He threw for 84 yards and one touchdown. While preseason football can be difficult to evaluate, he performed well in roughly a quarter and some change of action. His efficiency and composure reinforced the notion that the Steelers have one of the league’s most steady and trustworthy backup quarterbacks heading into the regular season. Roethlisberger is confident Rudolph has now locked up his spot as QB2 for the 2025 season. Steelers fans are now super eager to get updates on when Howard will be back from his injury. Howard and Thompson will fight for the QB3 spot. What grade would you give Rudolph for his preseason outing against the Jaguars?

Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite

Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes may continue to be one of the top contenders for the National League Cy Young Award, but there is one place where he has appeared mortal this season. On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers did to Skenes what they have done to plenty of MLB pitchers in 2025 ... put up big offensive numbers. For the second time this season, Skenes also pitched in Milwaukee on June 25, the Brewers forced him from the game after just 4.0 innings on Tuesday night, logging six hits and four runs during his time on the mound. Both of those performances came at Milwaukee's home stadium (American Family Field) and both are now Skenes' shortest outings of the season. While another NL Central team has put up more runs against Skenes this season (the St. Louis Cardinals nicked him for five runs in 6.0 innings on April 8), no other team has had the same kind of success over multiple starts by Skenes in 2025 as have the Brewers inside their home stadium. In all this season, Skenes has given up 10 hits and eight runs in 8.0 innings in Milwaukee. It was his third career outing on the road against the Brewers, with his lone 2024 start representing arguably the best outing of his rookie season. On July 11, 2024, Skenes struck out 11 and didn't allow a hit over 7.0 innings as the Pirates would eventually post a 1-0 victory. Tuesday's short outing was highlighted by a pair of Milwaukee home runs, including a leadoff solo shot by Sal Frelick that quickly set the tone for the Brewers. While Milwaukee's hit parade helped raise Skenes' ERA on the season to 2.13, it's hardly any reason for concern in a season where the 23-year-old right-hander is still a heavy favorite (-600) to win the NL Cy Young Award, per BetMGM. Skenes struggling in Milwaukee is likely more yet another stamp of approval on the Brewers' potential to be a threat once the postseason arrives. With an 18-4 record since the All-Star break entering Tuesday, Milwaukee has taken over the NL Central race from the Chicago Cubs. So what's the good news for Skenes? This is Pittsburgh's last trip to Milwaukee this season and the next-to-last series for the Pirates against the red-hot Brewers. Milwaukee will visit PNC Park for a three-game series on Sept. 5-7 and, if Skenes gets a chance for revenge against Milwaukee, there couldn't be a better place for him to take the mound. This season, in 11 starts covering 68.2 innings, Skenes has a 1.70 ERA in the Steel City.

Bryson DeChambeau divulges Scottie Scheffler's biggest advantage

We all know Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer on the planet by a fairly large margin, but what makes him so much more consistent than other stars in professional golf? Bryson DeChambeau, one of Scheffler's biggest rivals in major championships, thinks he knows the answer. In Tuesday's appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," DeChambeau detailed how Scheffler dominates the PGA Tour weekly. "He's got the best spin and distance control I've ever seen," DeChambeau said. "He controls the golf ball from a spin perspective so much better than everybody else. Like, if you're 175 yards out, and it's 10 miles [an hour] into the wind, he knows how to control the flight and spin to get that ball to land right next to the hole every time. Probably since Tiger [Woods], he's the best that we've seen." The stats confirm DeChambeau's breakdown. Scheffler has ranked first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach in three straight seasons. He also ranks first in proximity to the hole and greens in regulation percentage over the last four years. Iron play is Scheffler's superpower, but it wasn't always that way. "I played with him in college a bunch, and I've said it before, but he's definitely improved since college for sure," DeChambeau said with a chuckle. "It's impressive to see what he's done, and we're all aspiring to do that. That's something I've gotta get better at. I can hit it farther than him. I can hit it probably straighter than him. I can make just as many putts as him, but, really, it's about my iron play right now and wedges to get a little more consistent." Iron play is the biggest indicator of success in professional golf. If you're giving yourself more birdie chances from close range than anyone in the field, you're going to have the best chance to win by Sunday afternoon. No one is better at hitting specific distances more consistently than Scheffler. Just look at how accurate he is. DeChambeau has the best chance to catch Scheffler as the best player in the world because he's elite off the tee and on the greens, but that won't happen unless he makes a major improvement to his iron game.

Vikings make roster move that puts another nail in the coffin of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's first NFL Draft class

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's first NFL Draft class is the biggest factor in people not liking him as the leader of the Vikings' front office. The first three picks were all off the roster before the start of training camp with only one player from the first two days still with the Vikings. On Tuesday, that ended up changing with three roster moves being made. Vikings waive ILB Brian Asamoah II Tuesday was a day of multiple roster moves. Wide receiver Rondale Moore was placed on injured reserve, and Zeke Correll was waived with an injury designation. However, the biggest one came when the Vikings waived former third-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft Brian Asamoah II. It's a tough finish to Asamoah's career with the Vikings, especially after how it started. Asamoah looked like the next explosive Vikings linebacker. He was flying around the field consistently throughout his rookie season and was making plays. His time in Minnesota was best known for the forced fumble against the New York Giants on Christmas Eve. Things went wrong for a multitude of reasons for Asamoah, but the biggest one was the change at defensive coordinator. Ed Donatell was the defensive coordinator in his rookie season, and he ran a version of the Vic Fangio defense. When Brian Flores came to Minnesota, Asamoah didn't mesh with his defense, mainly due to his inconsistent tackling ability. You need to be a good tackler in Flores' aggressive style of defense. The Vic Fangio defense is predicated on gang tackling, which allows faster players to miss more tackles due to the conservative nature of the scheme. He could end up getting picked up by a team like the Philadelphia Eagles for that reason. It's also the latest example of the failure of the Vikings' 2022 NFL Draft class. Only Jalen Nailor and Ty Chandler are remaining. Luckily, the draft process for the Vikings has significantly improved. The Vikings now have three roster spots to fill going into joint practices, and it will be interesting to see how they get filled.
