The Oklahoma State University Cowboys were ranked #19 in the nation going into Saturday’s season opener. OSU plays in the Big 12 and in their long history they have picked up 50 (that’s right, 50) national championships. When you look over their Division 1 Football schedule they play the likes of Arizona, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Baylor.

OSU is a big school with an enrollment of 35,000+ students.

So, what in the world were they doing opening their 2012 season against Savannah State University?

Savannah State University is a school with a student enrollment of less than 3,500. They play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC? Who?).  When you look over their 2012 Football schedule they’ll play against schools like North Carolina Central, Howard University, Morgan State, Edward Waters College, and Bethune-Cookman University.

So, I ask again . . . why the hell are they opening their season on the road at OSU? You got that? They played AT OSU in a stadium that holds 17 times the number of Savannah State students!

A lot of people, particularly those that personally invest (a.k.a. gamble), must have been asking the same question because, going into the game OSU was awarded the largest point spread in the history of college football. The OSU Cowboys were favored by 67½ points!

Now, I must be honest. I have played the “spread” before in small betting opportunities. If I’m looking at the line, and I don’t know anything about the Savannah State Tigers, I’m doing one of two things. (1) I’m either staying far away from that game; or (2) I’m putting a little money on Savannah State betting that OSU couldn’t possible cover.

Well, I would have lost had I decided to go with my second option because the OSU Cowboys blew the Savannah State Tigers away 84-0 and increased their national rank from 19th to now #18. OSU had a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and 49-0 at the half! What kind of pep-talk could Tigers Head Coach Steve Davenport possibly have delivered at half-time?

In the end, OSU scored 12 TD’s; had 682 yards of total offense (versus 139 for the Tigers); had 33 first downs (versus 8); and were 7 of 10 on third down conversions. Amazingly, the only place Savannah State lead the game was in time of possession where they controlled the ball for 34 minutes (versus OSU’s 26).

College Football can frequently be a joke. But, there can’t be a better example than allowing  a nationally-ranked program to essentially host a high-school team and call that a “home opener” in front of 55,000+ fans! To make this even more absurd, OSU’s win actually increased their national ranking!

THIS game shouldn’t even count!
