“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback. I think we have the best in the league.”
That is what the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson told The Kansas City Star. Alex Smith played well in the last two years of his time in San Francisco. He struggled before since every year he would be working with a new offensive coordinator.
We all know the story of how 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh kept Colin Kaepernick the started when Smith missed a few game due to a concussion. In the offseason the Chiefs, who have been making a ton of moves, got Smith in a trade from the 49ers and looks to lead the Chiefs into a playoff run. The Chiefs traded a second-round pick in April’s draft and a conditional selection in next year’s draft to the 49ers to get Alex.
Pederson goes on to say, “There are a lot of great ones, but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”
Smith did prove himself over the years as still showing signs why he was the number one overall draft pick in a draft class that had Aaron Rodgers. Looking at the numbers it is hard to classify Alex Smith as the best quarterback in the league.
Alex Smith is up in the top 12 list of quarterbacks, but with Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Colin Kaepernick, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees Pederson needs to watch that he doesn’t put any added pressure on Smith.
I know that Kansas City is excited to have a quarterback who looks to have more than a few good games per season. Smith can certainly help the Chiefs give the Denver Broncos a run for their money in the AFC West. When it comes to dominating the entire NFL, let’s just see how the first season goes for Smith and the Chiefs.
