Found April 01, 2012 on The Victory Formation:

This sounds all too familiar. While speaking to Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star, Andrew Luck’s personal QB coach made a bold statement that is reminiscent of what was told to Jim Irsay and Bill Polian 14 years ago when the Indianapolis Colts had the #1 pick in the draft. Back then, the individual was Peyton Manning. He informed the Colts that he really would like to play for Indy but if they passed on him for Ryan Leaf, they would regret it for the next 15 years. Like the old saying, it’s deja vu all over again in Indy.

“If they over-think this, they’re going to make a mistake they’ll regret for years,” said George Whitfield Jr., Luck’s private quarterbacks coach.

I don’t think anyone really believes that the Colts are strongly considering Robert Griffin III, the consensus #2 pick in the draft behind Luck. The Colts haven’t come out publicly and declared Luck as their guy, but that has more to do with negotiating his first contract more than anything. However, unlike Ryan Leaf, there isn’t a behavior or attitude to consider with Griffin. If for some reason the team had a change of heart, it isn’t as great of risk had it been if the Colts took the former Washington St QB over Peyton back in 1998.

Luck possesses athleticism and an understanding of the QB position not seen by many at this point in their careers. Maybe not since Manning has there been a player more prepared to take on the nuances of an NFL playbook like Luck. His intelligence and ability to read defenses and make adjustments have him well prepared to takeover the signal caller duties from day one. Which is exactly why the Colts had no problem parting with Peyton last month.

The Colts know what is at stake on April 26th, the next 10-15 years of their franchise, and they will heed the advice of Peyton and Luck’s tutor and take him #1 overall.
