PLAYERS: Buster Olney
TEAMS: Cincinnati Reds
Anyone who watched the 16-inning affair between the Reds and Cardinals Wednesday night had to have come away scratching their heads at Cincinnati's puzzling insistence to bunt. All in all, four different Reds hitters in the span of two innings made an attempt to lay down a bunt from the bottom of the 14th inning on. First, Zack Cozart tried to sacrifice pinch-runner Billy Hamilton to second base after Ryan Ludwick led off the inning with a single. Cozart didn't get the bunt down, Hamilton wound up stealing second on a subsequent pitch, and eventually scored on a single. The same scenario happened the night before when Todd Frazier singled in Hamilton after failing to get a bunt down. The second bunt attempt came when Devin Mesoraco tried to advance Cozart, however, Mesoraco bunted the ball back to the pitcher for a fielder's choice. In the bottom of the 15th inning, Shin-Soo Choo led off with a single, and advanced safely to second base after the team'...

Video: Watch Homer Bailey snag a line drive right back up the middle

Your browser does not support iframes. Homer Bailey pitched a gem Tuesday night against the Cardinals to earn his 10th win of the season. However, he almost didn't make it out of the second inning. Check it out as Bailey escaped a scare in the top of the second when Yadier Molina nearly took his head off by a line drive. Fortunately, Bailey was able to get his glove...

Reds quotes from Thursday's series victory over Cardinals

After suffering a heart-breaking defeat in 16 innings on Wednesday, the Reds bounced back to win both the game, 6-2, and the series on Thursday behind a barrage of home runs and a gutsy performance from rookie Tony Cingrani. The huge win pulled the Reds within 3.0 games of the front-running Pirates for the division lead. And it pulled the Reds even closer to the Cardinals for...

Reds' Injury Notes: Cueto, Marshall expected to bolster bullpen

It's been an interesting week for the Cincinnati Reds. One day after Wednesday's extra inning debacle, Dusty Baker and his troops rebounded to triumph over the St.Louis Cardinals in a must-win game. Shaking off the effects of "buntgate" and all the negativity that came with it, the Reds also received some positive news on the injury front. Long maligned hurlers...

Hamilton's run, Chapman's fastball give Reds speed

Billy Hamilton lowered his shoulders and got into high gear, taking off for second base on Seth Maness' pitch. Whoosh! He was there. And moments later, he was dashing home with the only run of the game, one that would end with a little more radar-blurring speed. Closer Aroldis Chapman jogged out of the Cincinnati Reds' bullpen, reached the mound at leisurely pace, and finished...

Billy Hamilton steals first career base off of Yadier Molina

Cincinnati Reds prospect Billy Hamilton is fast - really fast. He's probably the fastest man in baseball today. He was a September call-up by the Reds, and got into Tuesday night's game with the Cardinals as a pinch runner in the seventh inning. Hamilton, who stole 155 bases last year at an 80.7% clip and stole "just" 75 bases this year at an 83% clip, came in...

Reds hit 3 HRs off Lynn in win

Todd Frazier hit two homers, including the first of Cincinnati's three off Lance Lynn, and the Reds recovered from a 16-inning loss by overpowering the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Thursday night, taking three of four in their final series of the season. Jay Bruce and Shin-Soo Choo also hit solo homers off Lynn (13-10), who lasted five innings and gave up three homers for only...

Reds coach Mark Berry is cancer free

This may not be a player update, but it's fantastic news.  Major League Baseball has taken steps to help rid the world of cancer perhaps more than any other professional sport.  As such, news such as what Mark Berry of the Cincinnati Reds received is incredibly important.  Berry, who had been battling, throat cancer, says he is cancer-free. According to Mark Sheldon of...

The Obviousness of Billy Hamilton

“I didn’t send him out there to paint,” Dusty Baker would say. “It was no secret.” One of the things about strategic maneuvers in baseball is that they’re usually evident ahead of time. There aren’t many equivalents to, say, a corner blitz. If a manager goes to the bullpen, the other team sees the new […]

23 games to go; it’s time to get hot

With 23 games to go in the regular season, the Reds are 3.5 games back on the NLC and lead the second wildcard spot by 7.5 over the Nationals. It’s not exactly sewn up yet, but it’s felt pretty likely that our boys will be in the post-season for a while now. The real question has been: then what? The first wildcard spot has belonged to the Cardinals for as long as the Reds have...

Reds hit 3 HRs off Lynn, beat Cardinals 6-2

Lance Lynn is in his worst slump of the season, and he's not sure why. Todd Frazier hit two homers, including the first of Cincinnati's three off Lynn, and the Reds recovered from a 16-inning loss by overpowering the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Thursday night, taking three of four in their final series of the season. Jay Bruce and Shin-Soo Choo also hit solo homers off Lynn...

Adams' HRs send Cardinals over Reds 5-4 in 16

Matt Adams' second homer sent St. Louis to a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 16 innings on Wednesday night, protecting the Cardinals' hold on second place in the NL Central. Adams broke an 0-for-17 slump by connecting in the 14th. After St. Louis let that lead get away, he homered again off Logan Ondrusek (3-1), ending the Reds' longest game of the season. The...

Capuano strains groin, Dodgers edged by Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Joey Votto emerged from his deep slump with a single and a two-run homer Friday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had another starting pitcher get hurt. The NL West leaders lost Chris Capuano to a mild groin strain in the second inning, when he grimaced on a pitch to Zack Cozart. Already this week, the Dodgers...

Adams' HRs send Cardinals over Reds

Matt Adams emerged from his deep slump and saved the St. Louis Cardinals from another costly loss. Adams broke an 0-for-17 slump and hit a pair of homers in extra innings on Wednesday night, the last one in the 16th for a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that protected the Cardinals' hold on second place in the NL Central. Nice timing. ''My rhythm's been off...

Reds top Cardinals, 6-2, to win series

The Reds did what they had to do. They won the big four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals wrapping up with a homer binge of a 6-2 victory Thursday night before a crowd of 21418 at Great American Ball Park. Winning three of four over one of the teams you're chasing in September is a good thing. But for the Reds it was a necessary thing. They needed to show they could...
