Found July 19, 2013 on Football and Futbol:
The Bengals’ defense was the 6th ranked defense in 2012 in YPG. Their front 7 defenders are physical and aggressive thanks to their defensive minded head coach Marvin Lewis. The Bengals made some moves in the offseason signing of veteran James Harrison, from their conference rival Pittsburgh Steelers. They have also made moves to re-sign some of their key personnel. The Bengals signed Carlos Dunlap to a $40 million extension, and placed the franchise tag on DE Michael Johnson, although it seems that Johnson may be on the out after 2013.   Defensive Line   The Bengals’ defensive line can be considered one of the most athletic and physical in the league. While most DTs are on the field to clog the middle and stop the run, Geno Atkins took the NFL by storm last year with 12.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. Domata Peko is next to Atkins and is a solid starter who has never disappointed. DE Michael Johnson one of the most athletic starters on the defensive side of the ball, is looking to reproduce the numbers he put up last season. With Johnson on a free agent year look for him to play for a big pay day and try to repeat his 11.5 sacks. On the other side of the ball the Bengals have DE Carlos Dunlap. As stated above, Dunlap was recently signed to a $40 million extension. A fourth year player out of Florida, Dunlap had the best year of his career in 2012.   Linebackers   In an earlier piece, I wrote about Vontaze Burfict, one of the stars of this defense. As an undrafted rookie Burfict played in all 16 games last season and led the team in tackles. Looking to take the experience he gained last season and enhance his abilities next to veteran LB James Harrison, Burfict has the chance to become one of the best LBs in the league over the next few years. The future of Rey Maualuga is uncertain. Although finishing 2nd on the team in total tackles he gained no interest in free agency and resigned with the Bengals. Maualuga’s pass coverage is shotty, at best, but he was given a second chance, and he knows it. Maualuga has to improve, if he doesn’t, look for Burfict to get moved to his natural MLB spot, and Emmanuel Lamur to step into the starting lineup. With the offseason signing of James Harrison the Bengals are looking for a veteran defender to step in that they are lacking as one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Harrison wants one thing, another ring, and the Bengals are hoping that Harrison can get them over the hump of losing to the Texans in the Wild Card round two years in a row.   The team that makes no moves in the off-season loses, and the Bengals are making moves. After two playoff appearances in two years the Bengals want to keep up the winning ways. This year I would like to see something that no Bengals fan has seen in MY entire lifetime, a playoff win. One isn’t too much to ask for is it?
