via reds.com Through Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds’ pitching staff had struck out 182 opposing batters in 189 innings pitched.  They top the National League and rank second in the Majors in total K’s for a staff.  And while this is terrible news for National League hitters, it’s outstanding news for Reds fans in the Cincinnati area, especially the fat ones. You see, a Cincinnati eatery, LaRosa’s Pizzerias, has a special promotion going based on Reds pitchers’ strikeouts.  LaRosa’s has promised free pizza for ticket-holders any time Reds pitchers whiff at least 11 opponents.  Fans have seven days to redeem tickets, getting an eight-inch pizza with any four toppings, a $6.79 value.  The Reds have 20 games under their belt this season and their pitchers have struck out 11+ opponents six times thus far.   The promotion has cost LaRosa’s over $100,000. Reds starters Mat Latos and Homer Bailey both rank in the top ten in the National League in strikeouts and closer Aroldis Chapman currently has 19 strikeouts through 10 1/3 innings. But despite the $100,000+ in free pizza LaRosa’s has given away, their marketing department is still on board with the promotion.  ”The real reason to do this is to underscore awareness of our brand and get people to visit,” said Pete Buscani, their executive vice president of marketing. “This is the best promotion we’ve done in a long time.” You’d be hard-pressed to find a Reds fan who disagrees.
