With the gaze of Cleveland sports fans firmly on the Cavaliers and the NBA draft, the Indians picked a good night to play uninspired baseball. Early on, it looked as though Corey Kluber (6-5, 4.16 ERA) would keep the Indians in the game and add another strong performance to his surprising summer. That came to a screeching halt in the fifth inning when Kluber allowed five runs. The damage could have been minimized, but there was a failed double play attempt, and Kluber himself booted a ball while reaching down to get a glove on it. It was Kluber’s shortest start of the season, not including the game against the White Sox in which he did not come back out after a ridiculously long rain delay. The Indians scored runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings but were shut down afterwards. In fact after Aviles’ solo homer (his fifth) leading off the fifth, the Indians managed just two hits. Both were singles. Two out of the four innings they went down 1-2-3. If you are looking for positives from this one, well here you go. Lonnie Chisenhall went 3 for 4, including a solo home run (his 4th), an RBI double and a single up the middle in the ninth. That’s five games in a row with at least one base hit for Chisenhall. It was also his first 3 hit game of the season. Also, Nick Hagadone (0-1, 5.40 ERA) pitched 1.1 innings of perfect relief. In his last 5 relief appearances, Hagadone has pitched 6.0 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 6 and walking 3. That’s not terrible. With a double header looming against the White Sox today, it seems like the Indians were happy to get out of Baltimore with a split. Asdrubal Cabrera and Nick Swisher both sat out this one as expected. Trevor Bauer (1-2, 2.76 ERA) will start the first game of the double header with Carlos Carrasco (0-3, 7.78 ERA) starting the second.
