Found September 12, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
The Seattle Mariners haven't played very well in September (nor have they played well for most of the season), compiling a 3-7 record going into Wednesday night's game versus the Houston Astros. That leaves the M's currently tied for the seventh-worst record in MLB and they probably want to keep it that way. As you may already know from last season's offseason transactions, the bottom 10 clubs in baseball will not lose their first-round draft pick if they sign a free agent who's received a qualifying offer from his previous team. Fear of losing that first-round pick is why players like Michael Bourn and Kyle Lohse didn't receive any contract offers through the winter, waiting until the spring before agreeing to deals.  For a rebuilding team like the Mariners, keeping their first-round pick in addition to having the ability to sign top free agents is crucial to adding talent to a lacking roster. One player whom general manager Jack Zduriencik is report...

Projecting the 2014 Seattle Mariners’ starting rotation

Lots of youngsters Fall continues to approach, as do the thoughts of better times for Seattle Mariners fans.  Last week I gave you my projected starting line up for the 2014 version of the Seattle Mariners.  Of course I wouldn’t let you down on the decisions that have to be made for the top of the hill too. First off, I seriously doubt the Seattle Mariners are going to go with...

Seattle Mariners: What’s left in the 2013 season?

A definite goal this season for the Seattle Mariners was to get to .500 or possibly over.  However, after another confusing home series loss, this one a sweep to the last place Houston Astros, Seattle can finish no better than .500 this season.  And, that will be a stretch, because they would have to win their last sixteen games in a row.  Seattle has only won one of their last...

Should Wedge and Jack Z stay or go?

Survival Guide 101 Geoff Baker brings up some good points in this one, Mariner fans. What do you think? Should Wedge and Jack Z stay or go? Games and series like these by Mariners get people fired We’ve been down this road with the Mariners before. Saw it in 2008 and 2010. Now, we’re seeing it again in 2013 and sooner or later, the question will have to...

Mariners provide rare September interleague matchup at Busch -- and that's about it

ST. LOUIS -- To look at the Cardinals' schedule and see the Mariners playing at Busch Stadium in the middle of September might seem like a mistake. The interleague foes never have met this late in the season. But uncommon meetings at unusual times have happened across the majors because of the realignment that gave both the NL and AL an odd number of teams. At least the Cardinals...

Is It Time For The Seattle Mariners To Extend Kyle Seager?

The financial landscape of Major League Baseball has changed drastically under the new collective bargaining agreement; teams are under spending restrictions on amateur talent.  The result is that fewer teams are willing to lose premium talents to free agency and finding ways to sign their players long term.  Extensions have been big the last several seasons—every offseason,...

Maurer is knocked out after 3 innings in 6-1 loss

Brandon Maurer's first time back on the mound as a starter since May didn't go the way he wanted. At least it was better than the last time he faced the Houston Astros. The Seattle Mariners right-hander allowed five runs - all scoring with two outs - and seven hits in three innings as the Astros completed a three-game sweep with a 6-1 victory Wednesday night. It was the...

Saunders serves up HR on 1st pitch, Mariners lose

A season that started with promise has long turned sour for the Seattle Mariners. An ugly loss Tuesday night against the rebuilding Houston Astros continued a downward trend for Seattle and pushed the team to hold a players-only meeting. ''It's about the internal fight that is in all of us and leaving it all out on the field,'' veteran Raul Ibanez said after...

Looking Back: Astros vs. Mariners review

Disappointing Sweep Well if the Seattle Mariners‘ series against the Houston Astros wasn’t disappointing, I don’t know what is. Playing host to the last-place Astros in what was the conclusion of their second-to-last home series of the year, the Mariners dropped three games in disgusting fashion, all but sending the rest of those fans who were still tuned into the club away...

Mariners Instruct Rosters

The Seattle Mariners will have 54 players reporting to Arizona in the next week to participate in the Fall Instructional and Co-Op Leagues. SeattleClubhouse lists the rosters by position inside.

Giants reportedly open talks with Pence; quiet on Lincecum

The Giants have opened a dialogue with the agents for Hunter Pence about a new contract the right fielder told the San Francisco Chronicle before batting practice Friday. But their other high-profile free agent right-hander Tim Lincecum hasn’t heard anything about a new deal. Lincecum told me he checked in with his agent last week and there was nothing new from the club. Both...

Cards beat M's, retake NL Central lead

Pete Kozma scored on catcher Mike Zunino's passed ball with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals retook the NL Central lead with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. The Cardinals lead the division by a game after Pittsburgh lost. They're 6-1 on a nine-game homestand. Kozma entered in the eighth inning as a pinch...
