The Flyers’ brain trust (Peter Lukko, Ed Snider and Paul Homgren) will need to be aggressive to keep up with the rest of the Eastern Conference as the NHL’s free agency window opens today!

The Philadelphia Flyers could find themselves in a precarious situation as the NHL free agency period opens today. The Flyers are quite happy with the team they’ve assembled, and the future does indeed look bright for Flyers hockey.

Trouble is… The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers are trying to make it very hard for the Flyers to keep up. The Penguins made a couple of moves at last week’s draft to free up salary cap space. They followed that up by signing Sidney Crosby to a new contract. While Crosby was expected to fetch a 7-year $70 million deal, the Pens gave him a 12 year $105 million deal. On the surface it seems fine. But what the Pens actually did was power the average annual value of Crosby’s new deal by spreading it out over a longer term. Ultimately, the Pens are said to be taking no prisoners in the war for Devils’ winger Zach Parise. They are also going to go after Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter.

I don’t have to tell you, Flyers fans, that would be a disaster.

The Rangers, meantime, are said to be in hot pursuit of Columbus Winger Rick Nash, who has been linked to the Flyers as well. Putting Nash on the Rangers would make a really good team that much better.

The Flyers themselves have some issues with the salary cap. There is no doubt that Paul Holmgren will be aggressive. He always is. The question is whether the Flyers will have the necessary flexibility to add top of the line players to their team. It already feels like the Flyers are a step behind in the race. If other teams around them continue to add great players, it could set off some reactionary moves by the Flyers.

You can say what you like about the Flyers organization, but they are always competitive and willing to do what it takes to make their team better. They will NOT be left behind. The problem is that to remain with the big dogs in the Eastern Conference, they may have to move some of the young talent that they’ve tried so desperately to amass and hold on to.

Reports in the last 24 hours still have the Flyers trying to swing trades for Rick Nash and Bobby Ryan. By the end of this day of days in the NHL, hopefully there will be a better idea of where the Flyers are headed.
