MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin held his season-ending news conference Tuesday morning at Miller Park, spending nearly 50 minutes looking back at what went wrong in 2013 and looking ahead to the offseason. Melvin expressed disappointment in Milwaukee's 74-88 record and fourth-place finish in the National League Central but did want to draw attention to some of the positives occurring during the lost season. Signing Carlos Gomez and watching him have a career year, the development of Jean Segura, Jonathan Lucroy's impressive season, Scooter Gennett's emergence and the improvement of the bullpen were a few of the positives he touched on. "There's reason to be optimistic about up the middle because that's one of the toughest things, is building a ballclub up the middle," Melvin said. "Having guys at that age and performing the way that they have, including the encouraging performance that Scooter gave us, also. "Our...

Melvin looks to improve Brewers for 2014

General manager Doug Melvin hopes the Brewers can build on the second-half positives this season. He also hopes it doesn't become a habit and Milwaukee can avoid another early slumber in 2014. Melvin met with reporters Tuesday at Miller Park to wrap up the injury-riddled 2013 campaign. He likes what he has up the middle with Jean Segura at shortstop, Carlos Gomez at second...

After Braun, injuries, Brewers look to get healthy

A challenging 2013 season has ended in Milwaukee with glimmers of hope for the future. Outfielder Carlos Gomez and shortstop Jean Segura are young, speedy cornerstones up the middle. Second baseman Scooter Gennett provided a late...

The commissioner's office announced Wednesday that Brock tested positive for Clomiphene, a drug that is used to induce ovulation in women and is considered a performance-enhancing drug. A 34th round pick in the June draft, Brock is currently on the...

Here’s to Dale Sveum (What More Could He Have Done?)

(Image: Jared Wickerham/Getty) I can’t imagine many Brewers fans took joy in yesterday’s news that the Cubs fired Dale Sveum.  Although we’ve all had a good laugh at the Cubs’ expense over the last two years – with the Brewers going 26-10 against those jokers – it was a shame that Sveum had to take the fall.  Even Cubs president Theo Epstein’s statement on the...
