Found July 29, 2013 on Pro Sports Daily:
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger the Toronto Maple Leafs may consider moving defenceman Cody Franson a restricted free agent looking at a major payday. The Leafs still have significant room under the NHL salary cap – according to with 20 players under contract the Leafs have just over $6 million available to sign their restricted free agents. Add in roughly a million to sign Mark Fraser and the club has roughly $5 million left for their two big-ticket restricted free agents: Nazem Kadri and Cody Franson. And that’s problematic particularly if (as Dreger’s report indicates) Franson is looking for something in the ballpark of $4.0 million per season. We’ll start with Kadri. The 22 year-old had a brilliant season putting up 44 points in 48 games (the second best total on the team) along with a plus-15 rating. There is at least one significant caveat on that total – while Kadri’s clearly a very good player the Leafs also converted shots at a 14.4% rate with him on the ice...

Michael Stuart: Rumor: Tampa Bay Lightning Interested in Cody Franson

Cody Franson has been linked to the Tampa Bay Lightning for what seems like an eternity. In reality, it was 2011 when the ‘Franson to the Lightning’ rumors first started swirling around the blogosphere. Now, with the Toronto Maple Leafs facing a sort of cap crunch thanks to some off-season decisions, Franson is rumored to be on the market once again. As one might expect...

Hockey Notes Toronto Style

via Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, The noise over the length of Dave Nonis’ new deal was just that, noise. Every general manager in hockey today should start with a five-year deal. It takes that long to see the fruits of your first or second drafts develop. In these salaried cap times, that’s the best way to do business, so long as you believe in the general manager ...

Colin Dambrauskas: Cody Franson - Could the Flames Help Out the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Follow me on Twitter!: @ColinDJD As several NHL teams continue to prepare their rosters for the 2013-14 season, many are having difficulties locking up certain players as the flirt ever too close to the NHL’s salary cap. The Toronto Maple Leafs just so happen to be one such team as they are currently left with roughly $ 4.8M in cap space to sign both Cody Franson and Nazem...

Jay McClement Has The Worst Raw Corsi

Yesterday I continued my look at sabermetrics and hockey but posting the worst 20 players in the 2013 season by their raw Corsi rating.  The worst player last season was Jay McClement of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He posted a -286 Corsi in the season.  That means his opponents attempted 286 more shots than Toronto did at even strength while McClement was on the ice.  If McClement...

Mike Augello: Fraser Salary Fight Key To Retaining Franson

The Toronto Maple Leafs have reached a critical point in their off-season, as the arbitration hearing for defenseman Mark Fraser is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Fraser stands to be the first player to not reach a compromise deal with his club this summer and the outcome of his contract squabble may have consequences for him but also for defense partner and fellow restricted...

Leafs re-sign Mark Fraser ahead of arbitration hearing

An observer of the week of silence in the Mark Fraser contract dispute with the Maple Leafs opined that "sometimes it's best to say nothing." That played out Tuesday morning when the fiesty defenceman and the club dodged a date with NHL salary arbitrator Fred Horowitz and agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.275 million US. It's not known yet who blinked with the...

Maple Leafs Bring Back Fraser by   Bradshaw Furlong

The Toronto Maple Leafs have avoided arbitration for the second straight RFA, the first being Carl Gunnarsson, as they have re-signed defenseman Mark Fraser to a one-year, $1.275 million contract. Fraser, 26 (will be 27 in September), was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the 3rd round (84th overall) back in the 2005 NHL Draft. After playing two years [...]
