If You Can't Get There With 4... Send More!

Posted October 09, 2012

True the defense faltered at the end allowing a 6 minute drive that ultimately lost the Eagles the game, but I find it hard to completely pin the Steelers loss on them. Still there is something wrong with the Eagles pass rush right now. Guys just aren't getting to the quarterback, because teams have chosen to max protect. The problem is that if an elite quarterback has time, it doesn't matter how many receivers he has out there, he will kill your defense. Elite quarterbacks know how to find holes in zone coverages. You give them time they will hurt you. If opponents want to max protect to give their quarterback time then the Eagles need to adjust and send more. Pressure is what matters when attempting to get a quarterback to make mistakes NOT SACKS. As I mentioned before a quarterback can still get sacked when sending four, and still completely be in a zone, because of a lack of pressure. Last season the Eagles sacked Alex Smith 3 times, but still loss the game. The Eagles despite their sacks never got Smith out of his rhythm. When they went to their Zone Coverages All they did was give Smith more time to expose them. Zone Coverages don't work if there isn't pressure on the quarterback. A lack of pressure can make even the average quarterback look spectacular. Just ask John Skelton. The Eagles are about to go up against some high quality quarterbacks in the very near future. They are going to have to find a way to get pressure on these guys if they hope to win those games. If teams are in max protect then the Eagles should send more players. Contrary to what Juan may believe blitzes can still be accomplished in Zone Coverages. Send more people.
