The first day of the Red Wings' training camp involved an emphasis on positioning and puck retrievals. The second involved transition play through the neutral zone and power play drills. While Wings coach Mike Babcock gave me a healthy sneer when I suggested that after today--the Red vs. White game takes place tomorrow at 11, and after that, the Wings will reassign most of their junior-eligible players to their respective rights-holders, and hold "morning skates" prior to road exhibition games in Pittsburgh and Chicago--he might have to pare down his teaching somewhat, insisting that he'll "work on details" (trust me, coach, I didn't think you'd be tossing off fluffernutter) and incorporate more systems drills (duh)... Bertuzzi vs. Bertuzzi at Red Wings training camp

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Day 2 of Red Wing training camp featured a spirited scrimmage between Team Lindsay and Team Howe, with Gordies guys scoring two late goals in a 2-0 victory. Rookie defenseman Max Nicastro and seasoned veteran Daniel Alfredsson accounted for the scoring Friday, but the highlight of the game was watching an uncle and his nephew square off on opposite sides...

Red Wings early overnight report: on the second day of training camp

Things get complicated in the neutral zone, and that's what Friday's practices (despite its Bertuzzi-Nyquist-Tatar tales and quips and quotes) were about, though I do need to note this comment that Wings coach Mike Babcock made to the Free Press's Helene St. James, because it's essential: Mike Babcock said he reassembled his lines just based on “who has a chance...

Red Wings' Jonas Gustavsson optimistic now that he's healthy

Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has done everything he can to reverse what was a dismal first season with the Red Wings. He had trainers both in the Detroit area and Sweden this summer work with him. Physically Gustavsson is as healthy as he’s been. Mentally Gustavsson has tried to forget about the injury-plagued 2013 lockout-shortened season as much as possible. Things are back...

Red Wings training camp, day 3: Tweets, Tootoo, Tatar and a post in progress

Amongst the various Tweets, quotes and stories from the third day of Red Wings training camp (audio already posted)... A teaching moment for Mike Babcock at third day of wings training camp. pic.twitter.com/Us4tKg1EJr — Chuck Pleiness (@wingsfrontman) September 14, 2013 The Red Wings worked on "backside pressure" and pressure down low today. There were...

Red Wings early overnight report: on the alumni game, the anatomy of a wraparound and prospects

The Alumni and Celebrity game the Red Wings' coaches, management and scouts took part in on Saturday night will most certainly not go down as the greatest hockey game ever played at Centre Ice Arena, but it sure was a hoot. The "red" team defeated the "white" team 8-6 on the strength of a hat trick from Kris Draper and a pair of goals from Grand Rapids Griffins...

Audio from day 3 of the Red Wings’ training camp: Kronwall, DeKeyser, Lashoff, Emmerton, Gustavsson

I just got my butt behind my computer, so I'm a little behind, but I'm spending the entire day at the rink to take in the Wings' practice, scrimmage (Team Lindsay and Team Delvecchio tied 2-2) and the celebrity and alumni game this evening. I'll probably keep my coverage very low after that as the Red vs. White game tomorrow (I added the roster FTR) will be preceded...

Red Wings quickies: very brief Red-White game summary, Wings-Pens roster and Tatar’s status updated

The "Red" and "White" teams technically tied 3-3 at the Red vs. White game in Traverse City this morning, with Xavier Ouellet registering a goal and an assist, Justin Abdelkader registering a goal and two assists, Henrik Zetterberg registering two assists and Daniel Alfredsson registering a helper, though Mike Babcock was NOT happy with his second line when speaking...

Detroit Red Wings Reduce Roster By Six

Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today reduced their training camp roster by six players who were assigned to their respective junior teams. With the moves, Detroit’s training camp roster stands at 59 players. PLAYERS ASSIGNED ON 9/15/13 Continue reading "Detroit Red Wings Reduce Roster By Six"

Red Wings training camp, day 2: on Bertuzzis, Nyquist and Babcock’s cheesy exhibition expectations

The Red Wings' second day of training camp seemed to and did in fact involve more dump-and-retrieval drills, some power play work (which involved Mikael Samuelsson donning a black defenseman's jersey), neutral zone drills and the kind-of-sort-of-re-debut of Daniel Cleary, who was wearing #71 temporarily as the #11 jersey he's going to wear needed to be sewn up--thus one...

Audio from day 2 of the Red Wings’ training camp: DeKeyser, Kindl, Howard, Nyquist, Babcock & Ber2zi

The Red Wings' didn't sign anyone today, and Daniel Cleary made his training camp debut--wearing #71, the "extra" jersey, until Paul Boyer could get a #11 jersey sewn up (when Mikael Samuelsson played on the point on the power play, he wore a black #71 jersey, so I'm guessing that the Wings made up red, white and black extras with that number)--and Team Howe...

Red vs White Game rosters and the Red Wings ‘cuts’ date

Trying to get this out as soon as posisble: I tweeted this, but the Red Wings' Red vs. White game takes place on Sunday at 11 AM at Centre Ice Arena, and here's how the rosters break down: Continue reading "Red vs White Game rosters and the Red Wings ‘cuts’ date"

Red Wings evening news: on the second line, Tatar, Helm, Abdelkader and the anatomy of a goal

The Red vs. White game marks the official end of the Red Wings' training camp activities at Centre Ice Arena (the team will hold morning and off-day skates tomorrow and Tuesday at Centre Ice, but "team one" is headed off to Pittsburgh to play the Penguins tomorrow night at 7), and the 3-3 tie and/or 4-3 shoout win for the red team really serves as the first simulated...

The Red Wings' perspective might be skewed

For the record, the Red Wings have Niklas Kronwall (32) Jonathan Ericsson (29) and Kyle Quincey (28), and, for example, the Winnipeg Jets aren't running anyone over the age of 29 out on defense, and the Wild only have Keith Ballard who has reached 30. Still, having a squad that doesn't have anyone pushing 50 is a step up for the Red Wings. Kudos to the Wings on their youngish defense!

Red Wings morning news: on the East, DeKeyser, Callahan and a Q and A with…Malik?

The Red Wings' exhibition schedule has almost always involved a heavy dose of Eastern Conference play, so the fact that six of the Wings' eight exhibition games involve the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs tends not to strike Wings fans as a regular season schedule-previewing slate of games. This year the Wings have finally moved to the Eastern...

Audio from the Wings-Penguins pre-game skate: Howard, Babcock, Franzen, Bertuzzi, Helm, Ferraro etc.

I'm sorry for the delay with these, but boy, today was intriguing as can be. For me, attending Red Wings practices is like going to a third or fourth-semester college class on hockey, and watching the drills--even if I don't understand them--is exciting as all hell get out. I will admit that Mike Babcock slashed me on the ass and told me I'd freeze it off because I...
