It Seems Jackson Will Be Returning Punts Again.

Posted July 28, 2013

This is basically what I got out of a recent article about Chip Kelly and his players. He had nothing but praise for Jackson on how he passed his conditioning test, how he practiced, and most important was he saw the potential of what Jackson could do in his offense. He’s wisely decided to let/make Jackson return punts again this season which makes one wonder what was Andy Reid thinking last season????? You have Jackson who is a playmaker and a guy who can break one whenever he gets his hands on the ball and Reid almost never used him last season. Why was that? Was it because Jackson refused? If that were true then Reid deserved to be fired. There is no way to justify a coach as tenured as Reid bowing down to any player let alone a guy Jackson’s size. Reid allowing Jackson to do whatever he wanted would be further proof that he had lost it. If he didn’t allow Jackson to  return punts for fear of injury again Reid should have been fired. First no one can predict when and how an injury could occur. As such assume that Jackson is at greater risk returning kicks isn’t necessarily true as Jackson was injured last season on a reverse play, and look at Maclin this season getting injured without even putting on pads. Basically Reid hindered his football team out of fear placing a far inferior returner out there just incase somebody might get hurt? A big return can turn a game around. A great return man could improve field position without even touching the ball as teams kick to avoid him. All in all regardless of the reason why Andy choose not to properly use Jackson, his reasoning was basis enough  for him to be fired.

  • I seen an interview from last year that Jackson said he would return punts anything to win. Something along those lines
this is from last year too

This is the interview I seen but didn't feel like to edit my first line

  • Then it seems like Reid purposefully didn't place his team in the best position to win. In either case Reid needed to go.

  • Last season Johnson struggled as both, yet Reid kept putting him out there. I hope Thomas Jones can take over the KR job. He and Jackson's would be a formidable return group. As we all saw last season field position matters.
  • Who knows why Jackson didn't return punts but I got the feeling it was the traditional "starters shouldn't be playing special teams" and with Jackson's size I kind of get that. Reid did watch him get concussed and laid out a couple times. I wonder if Kelly rethinks having him as the number 1 punt returner with Maclin's injury. I'm extremely curious and excited to see how all this pans out.
  • He was returning punts today along with poyer n Johnson. I'm not positive but I think shepherd was out there too, but don't hold me to that one.
  • All of Jackson's various injuries occurred as a receiver and not as areturner.
  • I know that Eazy but you can't honestly tell me that at 170 you don't worry about Jackson getting hurt on special teams with players throwing their bodies around looking to make a play and prove to their coaches they belong in the league in some capacity. One part of me loves the thought of Jackson returning punts but if he goes down with an injury while returning one...ouch. My heart will pumping when he lines up to return one every time...let's just hope it's more reward and no punishment though.
  • I think as a punt returner Jackson can control the types of hits that can be put on him. I would be more concerned with him returning Kicks, because that the play where big guys can get to full speed. In PR situations mostly the gunners are the guys capable of laying a hit which are guys who are close to his size.
  • Green this is my response to the other post in maclin will be missed

If anyone says Barkley looked good or the best today never listen to or read them again, they clearly don't know what they r talking about or r flat out lying to ur face. Vick did have some scrambles that lead to nothing. However he never threw across his body. As far as I remember only scrambled left to pass and only one throw was an awkward one to desean who was wide open but it one hopped and the defense had no chance to pick it. Also idk of they are counting the play where he scrambled (left) and threw it put of bounds. Me n my cousin looked at each other n said uh oh he CAN learn. Barkley was the worst qb today the only one who could come close was foles. Stats r miss leading. Damn near all of foles completions were after he would have been sacked or just swing passes. He could of had more but he was missing wide open guys n holding the ball looooong to the point it felt weird. We all know Vick is the one who holds the ball long. I don't think anyone is denying that, but today u would have thought the opposite. Vick was SHARP. Went through progressions n didn't hesitate to let it rip too much. He did miss some open guys but not too nearly as much as foles. I was disappointed in foles today big time. I can't believe no one is talking about kinne. He was good. Defiantly third best today behind Vick then Dixon.

As for graham. Damn he's quick dropping into coverage. But he has hands of stone. In drills he was tipping them all day but couldn't catch anything. I didn't see him get one. He did tip some up to I believe fletcher.

I seen people praising the dline. But they didn't do squat. It did seem like everyone was easing off a little today. Maybe cause its first day of hitting? Idk.

The standouts to me today were
    Vick
    Dixon
    Kinne
    Shady
    Polk
    Desean
    Avant
    Cooper
    Graham
    Kendricks
    Phillips
Colt anderson ( he did lay the biggest hit of the day)

I gotta add brad wing suuuuuuuuuuuucks
  • We'll see how it all pans out, 20dawk. It is only the 3rd practice after all. My point is that there are so many different opinions on how the QBs looked coming in it's hard to pick out what to believe and I am no different from the rest. I'm going to hope the guy I want to see is shining the most...although I have heard no one state that Foles stood out yesterday. I also still haven't heard any more glowing reports about Vick either though...pretty much everyone is still stating no QB stood out. Looking forward to seeing things for myself come the preseason.

As for Graham dropping into coverage...I'll take him knocking down balls and not picking them off. That could come later but if not the Eagles could still survive as long as he can cover a little bit. Let's not fool ourselves...his number one priority is going to be rushing the QB.

As for the D-line. I'm sure it's nothing to be worried about yet. Lots of changes and guys still getting the feel for what they are doing in the different schemes. I also heard that as soon as hands were on the ball carriers the whistles were blowing. Hard for the defense to look too good when they can't get overly aggressive. Demeco Ryans said that is the way they practiced in Houston...hopefully it works out here in Philly.

As for Brad Wing...the only thing I can say is that it is (again) only the 3rd practice but it doesn't bode well for him that he couldn't pass his endurance test right away. I am pulling for him so I hope he turns it around. I would love to see the Eagles find a young punter that works out and if it's Wing that would be great (although he seems like a strange, troubled dude). It will be hard for him to beat out Jones and I have to admit it doesn't sound good so far.

One of the things I liked seeing from your original post was how good Phillips looked. Hopefully that continues. I'm a little surprised because I heard someone (it may have been CSNPhilly reporter Michael Barkann) report that their hopes were down on Phillips because he was still hobbling around the facilities when they saw him. Shows me once again that I can't believe all media reports either.
  • Phillips was flying around diving for balls, it was nice to see. Sadly wolff did nothing to stand out, but I got tickets for the 11th practice and hopefully they will be allowed to tackle so we can actually see how the defense is without them pulling up too much
  • I read that Foles and Barkley struggled Sunday. I also read that Vick's been getting more reps than any of the rest. I don't really care who wins the job as long as they are pushed. So far still no real hitting. The read option has only been used with Vick. I don't really know what that means other than if Kelly desires to use it on a regular basis Vick will be his guy at least until he gets hurt.
  • They ran it with foles when I was there n my entire section was laughing. It looked so damn funny. The defense would have killed him.
  • Read option would be a bad option with Foles.
