Making his first start of the season, Jonas Gustavsson stopped 25 shots and all three that he faced in a shootout to help the Detroit Red Wings rally past the San Jose Sharks, 2-1. The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie into the third period, when San Jose took the lead on a one-timer by Logan Couture. But the Wings answered less than two minutes later, as Patrick Eaves redirected a Niklas Kronwall shot into the net. Damien Brunner scored the only goal of the shootout, beating Antti Niemi with a wrister glove-side. Red Wings’ Wheel: Gustavsson. He said earlier on Thursday that he was nervous for his first start — he had relieved Jimmy Howard in a pair of losses and spent the rest of the season trying to recover from a groin injury. He was beyond solid, even if he’d like to have Couture’s short-side goal back. The Wings needed a pick-me-up from their netminder, with the offense reeling again, and Gustavsson delivered. Red Wings’ Heel: Justin Abdelkader. Detroit played a second straight pretty solid road game, so there are few goats. Abdelkader, though, coughed up the puck at the blue line to set up Couture’s goal, and he continues to fail to take advantage of playing alongside Pavel Datsyuk. What’s Next: We assume your calendars are circled. The Wings will come home from the West Coast for a Sunday matinee affair against the Chicago Blackhawks, who are still undefeated in regulation. All that stands between the Hawks and a 21-game points streak is a Friday night contest, at home against Columbus.
