PLAYERS: Miguel Cabrera
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera returned to the lineup yesterday after missing Sunday's game due to his lingering groin injury. Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters -- including Jason Beck of -- that he won't hesitate to rest Cabrera if he feels it's necessary, but he also said that he will play the All-Star if he's healthy. "If he's OK to play, I'm going to play him," Leyland said. "Not to say that I won't rest him." Cabrera exited Saturday's contest after experiencing soreness in his groin. He was out of the team's Sunday lineup, but he told reporters over the weekend that his condition was improving. He improved enough to return to yesterday's lineup, but his groin ailment will be something to keep an eye on. It is certainly an injury the Tigers will want to resolve before the postseason begins. Before he's healed, Cabrera is at risk of pulling up lame at any point, specifically on the base paths. It sounds like the Tigers are going to give Cabrera rest so as not to push the leg injury. During yesterday's game Cabrera also appeared to be taking it easy during ground outs. He's not fully healthy, but Detroit is hoping a combination of rest and taking it easy when he is suiting up will allow Cabrera to be closer to full-go for the playoffs. Tigers' Miguel Cabrera held out of lineup with sore groin

The Detroit Tigers aren't taking any chances.  With Miguel Cabrera being pulled out of Saturday's game with a minor injury, the team decided to hold him out of Sunday's game altogether.  He is still nursing a sore groin. According to Jason Beck of, Cabrera said he felt better prior to Sunday's game, but it seemed like he knew he wasn't playing.  Cabrera...

Fielder: Work ethic comes from father

DETROIT -- If all goes well for Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder -- knock on wood -- he'll play in his 500th consecutive game Tuesday night in Minnesota. A blue-collar, lunch-bucket mentality is required to become an iron man like Fielder, who has missed only one game since May 2008. My father was a steelworker in Ecorse, Mich., for 44 years and never missed a day of work...

Game 2013.157: Tigers at Twins

91 – 65, 2. I liked it better when you got all of your baseballs stats from one place: the sports page. Or really, one to two pages of the sports section. Everything was laid out right in front of you, so you could jump from team to team, or stat to stat, without clicking anywhere or waiting for a page to load. Growing up, I regularly read the Fort Worth Star Telegram and then...

Tigers clinch American League playoff berth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Torii Hunter couldn't help but peek at the out-of-town scoreboard at Target Field, glancing toward the LED board in right-center field. When Cleveland trailed Chicago by a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers outfielder felt his team had a chance to clinch the American League Central on Tuesday night with a win over Minnesota. Not long after, the score in...

Tigers try to cut magic number to one vs Twins

The Detroit Tigers were unable to wrap up the AL Central in front of their home fans. But considering their weak competition over the final week, they shouldn't have too much trouble doing so on the road. Justin Verlander takes the mound in Monday night's opener versus a Minnesota Twins team he hasn't lost to in 12 meetings. The Tigers' magic number to clinch the...

Tigers clinch playoff spot with win

Doug Fister struck out seven and the Detroit Tigers homered three times in the fourth inning to clinch a playoff berth with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Victor Martinez and Omar Infante went back-to-back and Austin Jackson hit a two-run homer later in the fourth to put the Tigers in front. Fister (14-9) gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings...

PHOTO: Tigers rookies become Disney princesses

Aside from the Tiger rookie pitchers towing the Hello Kitty backpack to the bullpen prior to every game it’s become an annual tradition for all the rookies to get in on the humiliation but in the nature of good fun. This year the Bruce Rondon, Bryan Holaday, Hernan Perez, Nick Castellanos, Jose Alvarez, Jose Iglesias and Evan Reed dressed as some of the most disturbing (and funny...

Tigers can clinch AL Central with win over Twins

Max Scherzer had a modest celebration with his Detroit Tigers teammates after his latest victory. There could be a much bigger one following his next start. After earning his 20th win last time out, Scherzer will try to help the Tigers wrap up a third consecutive AL Central title Wednesday night at the Minnesota Twins. It took five tries before Scherzer (20-3, 3.00 ERA) reached his...

Game 2013.159: Tigers at Twins

92-66, 1. Since this won’t be my last post this season, I won’t feel bad about a short one on a busy day. You know that a win tonight, or a Cle loss, will clinch a third straight division title. That’s the first time since…ever. They did win three straight pennants from 1907-1909, but they have never won 3 straight division titles. Please keep that in mind as you shake up...

Concerns still linger about Miguel Cabrera

DETROIT -- The way things have been going, it's doubtful that Miguel Cabrera will be able to get 100 percent healthy before the end of the season. Of course, the Tigers and Cabrera both hope the end of their season doesn't come for several weeks. Cabrera missed his 13th game of the season Sunday, a 6-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. With only six games remaining in the...

Miguel Cabrera Out Of Lineup Sunday

(Photo Credit: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images) DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera was out of the lineup for the Detroit Tigers in their 6-3 loss Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. The third baseman left Saturday night’s game due to soreness in his groin. Over the past few months, Cabrera has been nagged by minor injuries, but has […]

Tigers set AL strikeout mark and clinch playoff berth in 4-2 win over Twins

For the first time since 1907 the Detroit Tigers have clinched three consecutive postseason berths after tonight’s 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. With the win the Tigers guaranteed themselves at least a trip to the AL Wild Card game as their magic number for the division has been reduced to one game. And it’s because of that one game (as well as Jason Giambi hitting a...

Game 2013.156: White Sox at Tigers

Detroit Tigers: 91-64, 1st Place (6.0 ahead of Cleveland).  Magic Number: 2 Well, time certainly does fly, flies like Prince Fielder scoring from first on a double, and comes barreling home to this my last regular season post. Time to get myself in playoff shape. With a magic number down to 2, it is possible for the Tigers to celebrate the division title in front of the home fans...
