MLB Injury News:
Entering the season, the Washington Nationals wouldn’t have
been a team many would expect to be seeking rotation upgrades over the summer.
Washington’s rotation is built around young arms such as Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Ross Detwiler and Jordan Zimmermann, and the team added veteran and
former ace Dan Haren over the winter. Haren has struggled with injury and inconsistency,
and as a result Buster Olney of ESPN says the Nationals are looking to bolster
their starting pitching depth.

Prior to hitting the disabled list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, Haren struggled over his first 15 starts with the Nationals.
The right-hander posted an ugly ERA and WHIP of 6.15 and 1.439 over 82 innings
He’s since been replaced in Washington’s starting rotation
by 24-year-old rookie Taylor Jordan. The right-hander has been effective over
his first two starts – allowing three earned runs over 10 innings – but the
Nationals may not be comfortable relying on his unproven arm for the remainder
of the season. If they are also wary of Haren’s abilities following his rough
start, Washington could pursue a starter on the trade market.

And so, after Davey Johnson made his intentions to sit Bryce Harper for the rest of the weekend clear on Friday night, Harper sent a joking text to Davey demanding a trade:
Harper text to Davey last night: "Play me or trade me." Davey: "Since trading him is out of the question, guess he's playing."

Congrats to Jordan Zimmermann for being named an All-Star for the first time. Unfortunately, MLB.com is selling a "Zimmerman" NL All-Star jersey.
Now, get over to MLB.com and vote for Ian Desmond, please...

Seems like only yesterday Davey Johnson was rushing Bryce Harper back from his rehab assignment...
Now, Davey's giving Harper the rest of the weekend off because he's...slumping (0-18 since hitting that HR in his first AB back)? So much for getting the gang back together:
"I'll probably give Harper a couple days off. I think he's just fighting himself...
The Washington Nationals placed left-handed pitcher Ross Detwiler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 4, on Sunday with a lower back strain.
Detwiler, originally projected to start Monday's series opener at Philadelphia, is 2-7 with a 4.04 ERA in 13 starts. He experienced discomfort in his back when he threw his bullpen session Saturday.
Washington is expected...
According to this tweet I saw this morning from James Wagner of the Washington Post:
Bryce Harper says he was asked to participate in the home run derby. Hasn’t given answer yet. Wouldn’t tip his hand. Will answer tonight.

At last, the Washington Nationals' lineup is starting to click. In related news, Davey Johnson's squad is closer to first place than it has been in over six weeks.
Ryan Zimmerman hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper added three hits and two stolen bases, and the Nationals sent the San Diego Padres to their ninth straight loss, 11-7 on Sunday.
Stephen Strasburg (5-6) allowed four...
Apparently persuading Nationals manager Davey Johnson to let him play, Bryce Harper is in Saturday’s lineup against the San Diego Padres in Washington, D.C. Suffering shoulder and knee bruises in a violent collision with the outfield wall at Chavez Ravine on May 13, the 20-year-old Harper is hitting a pathetic .053 since returning from the disabled list on Monday. Batting .260...
Bryce Harper was elected by the fans to start in his first All-Star game today, becoming the youngest player since Ken Griffey Jr. made the lineup in 1990.
The real good read, though; is one that will tug on your heart strings. Harper spent time with a terminally ill young man yesterday prior to the Nationals game. For all the talk about Bryce Harper being a bad guy when he entered...
Ryan Zimmerman hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper added three hits and two stolen bases, and the Washington Nationals sent the San Diego Padres to their ninth straight loss, 11-7 on Sunday.
Stephen Strasburg (5-6) allowed four runs over six innings. He matched his season-high with nine strikeouts as the Nationals won their fourth straight, the last three over San Diego.

Washington Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper isn't resting
this weekend, after all.
Since manager Davey Johnson decided to flip-flop his batting order, the surging Washington Nationals appear to have found their groove at the plate.
Seeking a fifth straight win, the Nationals may need another big offensive showing in Monday night's opener against the Philadelphia Phillies given the way scheduled starter Dan Haren has struggled.
After his team was limited to...
Just a few hours after sweeping the San Diego Padres, the Washington Nationals added a little depth to their bench by trading for right handed hitting outfielder Scott Hairston. As reported by Masn’s Dan Kolko through Ken Rosenthal:
Per @Ken_Rosenthal, the #Nats have acquired OF Scott Hairston from the Cubs for a minor league pitcher. Brings right-handed pop off bench.
