On Monday afternoon the New York Yankees put shortstop Derek Jeter back on the disabled list with a strained right calf. The move comes after Jeter played in just four games after returning from a season-long stint on the DL. Jeter underwent an MRI on his calf on Sunday, and it revealed a Grade 1 strain. While that is mild, the 39-year-old had been dealing with it for a few days. The move is retroactive to August 3, so he will be eligible to return on the 18th. So far this season Jeter is hitting just .211 with one home run and two RBIs. Jeter has suffered through a calf injury before. Back in 2011 he missed three weeks just before he picked up his 3,000th career hit. When asked about the injury and his season thus far, Jeter called it a “nightmare.” The Yankee captain fractured his left ankle during Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS. He had surgery and was expected to be ready for Opening Day this year. But after a long recovery process, a second fracture developing during spring training and that put him out until at least the All-Star break. During his first game back from his ankle issues, Jeter injury his quad while running the bases. Now he has a calf strain. So yeah, it’s fair to say the baseball gods aren’t smiling on Jeter in 2013. The Yankees will welcome back third baseman Alex Rodriguez on Monday night, but, of course, he faces a lengthy suspension that could begin as soon as this week. New York enters Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox with a record of 57-53. The Yankees are 9.5 games out of first place in the American League East, and remain 4.5 games out of the final wild card spot.
