Panthers GM Dave Gettleman joined WFNZ-AM in Charlotte on Thursday and was asked about the team’s plans for RB DeAngelo Williams moving forward. Carolina drafted RB Kenjon Barner in the sixth round of last weekend’s draft and there’s been rumors circulating for several months now that Williams could be cut loose at some point in the near future. On the topic of Barner’s impact on Williams, Gettleman mentioned that “you can never have too many good players at one position,” but wasn’t willing to commit to the idea Williams being on their roster to start the season. “Right now, he’s on the roster,” said Gettleman.”…None of us know if we’re going to be here tomorrow.“ The Panthers have some serious cap issues moving forward. Designating Williams as a post-June 1 cut would free up $3.4 million in cap space, but would also create a significant of dead money for their 2014 cap. There’s still a chance that Carolina could approach Williams about restructuring his current deal, but this is unlikely to have a major impact on his 2014 cap figure. Carolina has reportedly fielded offers for him in the past, but it’s doubtful that anyone would be willing to trade future draft picks for him, considering his salary. It seems likely that Williams will remain on their roster at the start of the 2013 regular season.
