So maybe the Carolina Panthers are more smashmouth than finesse this year. While they may not be on the level of the Cardinals’ Rashad Johnson, who lost an actual chunk of his finger in the middle of a game this season, one of their linebackers knows a little bit about crooked digits and playing through pain. Linebacker Thomas Davis badly dislocated his finger during the first quarter of the Panthers’ game against the Dolphins on Sunday, with the bone breaking through the skin and the wound requiring stiches, coach Ron Rivera told reporters. Thomas still played every snap on defense, though, a total of 63 times he dug in despite the injury. Davis wasn’t the only Carolina player whose hand wasn’t shipshape Sunday, though. Defensive end Greg Hardy said after the game that he played two and a half quarters with his thumb “torn open.” He had it heavily bandaged after the game. The Panthers (8-3) are emerging as the pride of the NFC, with much of the credit going to their defense, which ...

Steve Smith: I destroyed his Fred Smoot's career

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith is on a tear this season. He got the best of Patriots CB Aqib Talib two weeks ago after getting into a war of words with Rams CB Janoris Jenkins in week 7. The brash Smith is now reflecting on his past accomplishments. One particular accomplishment has a special place in his heart - former Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings...

Panthers LB played through dislocated finger with bone out

Add this to the annals where the toughness exhibited by professional football players are compiled: According to Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, linebacker Thomas Davis suffered a dislocated finger during Carolina’s 20-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Not only did Davis dislocate his finger, the injury reportedly was so severe that a […]The post Panthers...

Panthers’ Thomas Davis played full game with dislocated finger

Photo via Getty NFL linebackers are badass mofos. This much we know. Still, it’s always a good reminder to understand what some of these guys play with and through in terms of pain and injuries. Case in point: Thomas Davis. Davis is an outside linebacker on the Carolina Panthers. The former first round pick out of Georgia is a team captain. He leads the Panthers in (solo) tackles...

Ron Rivera doesn't want QB Cam Newton to be top rusher every week

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is growing into the offensive terror his tremendous ability dictates including running the football, but coach Ron Rivera says he isn't the team's lead back. The team's running game has stalled, however, with Newton's mobility he can make up the difference, but Rivera knows that can be a slippery slope that can get the QB hurt.

Carolina Panthers: Super Bowl Contender or Pretender?

The Carolina Panthers are now on a seven-game winning streak under Cam Newton. Newton hasn't had a great statistical season, yet he has matured greatly as a quarterback -- Newton has been patient in the pocket, rather than trying to make a play out of nothing, which often results in an interception. The 2013 Newton takes what defenses gives to him, rather it be a 5-yard completion...

Carolina Panthers push win streak to 7 games

MIAMI – “Seven! Seven wins in a row for the Carolina Panthers! MWA! HA! HA!” (Count Von Count on the Panthers). The Panthers (8-3) are on a roll and have tied their franchise regular-season win streak (with the 1996 team) at seven games following another close win – this time at Miami (5-6). Quarterback Cam Newton led the black-clad visitors down the field on an 80-yard...

Rivera's hot seat doused by 7-game win streak

Panthers coach Ron Rivera has gone from hot seat to potential NFL coach of the year candidate following Carolina's seven-game winning streak. The Panthers (8-3) are in the hunt for their first NFC South division title since 2008, something few would have envisioned after Carolina stumbled out of the gate with a 1-3 start for the third straight season under Rivera. But things...

Cam Newton realizing his potential

To say Cam Newton has flourished over the Carolina Panthers' past four games isn't the whole truth. Yes, the 24-year-old quarterback has a 4-0 record with seven touchdown passes and a 72.3 completion percentage over that span, but he's been on the upswing since last season, not just during this recent winning stretch. And it's not the whole truth to pin the recent...

Cam Newton Lifts Panthers to 7th Straight Win

The Carolina Panthers played about 55 minutes of ugly football in their matchup with the Miami Dolphins Sunday afternoon. But down just three with the fourth quarter dwindling down, they only needed to be pretty for four minutes and 13 seconds. Cam Newton made sure they were.Newton led the Panthers offense to a three and a half-minute, 72-yard scoring drive that ended in a touchdown...

Steve Smith rocking his own “Ice Up Son” Shirt

Newton has Panthers on an absolute roll

The Carolina Panthers pulled out a narrow 20-16 comeback against the Miami Dolphins, a game in which the Panthers increased their winning streak to seven. It was a win in which Carolina was handed a tremendous amount of adversity, most notably a 13-3 halftime deficit. Despite such hurdles being delivered in their path, the Panthers simply proceeded to exhibit their intangibles...

Panthers now finding ways to win close games

There was a time when Ron Rivera's Carolina Panthers couldn't win a close game. Now they refuse to lose them. The streaking Panthers (8-3) have won seven straight games, including the last three by erasing fourth quarter deficits. That has helped stem the tide that had plagued Rivera during most of his tenure in Carolina. The Panthers had fallen to 2-14 under Rivera in...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers: 2013 Week 13 NFL Pick

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-8) at Carolina Panthers (8-3) At first glance, Carolina definitely seems like the right side here. Tampa Bay’s fluky win in Detroit last week moved this line 2.5 points, from 11 to 8.5, from last week to this week. That’s significant. The reason I call Tampa Bay’s win in Detroit last week fluky is because they won the turnover battle by 5. That’s really...
