A season ago, the Arizona State Sun Devils put together a very unexpected run in the Pac-12, posting an 8-1 conference record that included wins over USC, Washington, UCLA, Oregon State and Arizona. But ASU, with a chance to play for the conference title against Stanford, laid an egg in its final league contest. So it should come as no surprise that head coach Todd Graham is making sure his players are focused on getting back to the big stage in 2014. Arizona State opened practice this fall with a decal of the Pac-12 trophy on the back of its helmets.

The Pac-12 Championship Trophy is on each ASU helmet. @CoachGrahamASU‘s idea, of course. http://t.co/BVgEo5mRtC pic.twitter.com/dvlppCiduh

It’s a not-so-subtle reminder of how close the Sun Devils came to playing in a BCS bowl game last season. ASU isn’t expected to compete for the Pac-12 this year – analysts are locked on Oregon, UCLA and Stanford – but then again, the Sun Devils weren’t last year either. Graham seems to have the team properly motivated.
