Realistic expectations when looking at all the changes

Posted June 29, 2013

From the majority of what I have read and seen on this website, from what I have read in the newspapers and seen on local and national TV most people don't expect a playoff run from the Eagles in 2013 and in my opinion they shouldn't. Isn't that what many of our debates have been about this year? Our expectations as fans based on the coaching changes, the system changes and the roster turnover (more to come next year I would guess as Kelly looks to find more of "HIS" players). We, the fans don't want a 7-9 year but with what we know has happened with this team it probably is a realistic finish if things go well. We don't expect the players to lay down and tank games but we as fans can afford to debate whether another 4-12 season would go further in helping the Eagles than a 7-9 record. I never enjoy watching the Eagles lose and even towards the end of bad seasons like last year I find myself getting pumped when I see the Eagles in any game even though I know with each game the Eagles win their positioning in the draft gets worse. Do I want to see the Eagles go 4-12 next season...no I don't but I would rather they go 4-12 while finding out what they have in either Foles or Barkley (or both) than to go 7-9 with Vick under center and figuring that QB is the top need in 2014 because Kelly may not be able to afford a 2nd year of mediocrity while Foles or Barkley take their lumps.

  • Why are people assuming that Barkley or Foles can't get the job done? I think the part about drafting a 2014 guy is the afterthought here. It's more important to see what we have in the other two guys.
  • We won't know unless they get some playing time and with Vick on the roster the time may not be what I would like to see. I do think the skepticism with Foles and Barkley are warranted though. Foles didn't exactly look like a world beater with his time last year (but he did improve weekly for the most part) and Barkley comes with the knowledge that every team looked the other way numerous times on draft day...probably because of worries about his arm strength. The major point though is that we all know what Vick brings...turnovers, sacks and injuries.

I see that our "buddy" is telling you that he doesn't want to discuss the QBs in his recnet posts and that he only wants to discuss tanking the season. He refuses to admit that you have to look at all aspects when discussing a simple topic reasonably. Your whole gist has been that you are willing to see a few more losses this year at the cost of QB development and the Eagles seeing what they have at the position...how doesn't it fit? He wants you to argue your point without using your whole basis to your argument. He did the same thing while trying to argue that the Raiders were making great moves even though the truly not so great moves were brought on by bad drafting and bad trades within the last couple years. You have to discuss everything in it's context and discussing how the Raiders made a "great" move by acquiring a couple late picks for Carson Palmer who they gave up a couple high picks for not that long ago is being extremely close minded no matter how he tries to paint it. Have fun with him. LOL.
  • Well you know that guy only sees things his way. He recently gave spots a duly noted comment on a comment which she was spot on. He swears he knows everything even though he's two steps behind nearly all the time. I love how he and wood go out there way to really never answer simple questions they try to cloud their answers with a lot of meaningless words and never get to the meat of the problem.
  • I saw his "duly noted" to Spotella and you are right...she was dead on but he could never bring himself to tell her that.
  • How weak is that?
  • "I would rather they go 4-12 while finding out what they have in either Foles or Barkley (or both) than to go 7-9 with Vick under center and figuring that QB is the top need in 2014 because Kelly may not be able to afford a 2nd year of mediocrity while Foles or Barkley take their lumps."
This is the key isn't it? Of course if Chip Kelly does decide to go with Vick, goes 7-9 and is forced to go through a rough patch the season after with Barkley or Foles he deserves to be fired after his second year. When will these coaches learn that Mike Vick equals zero job security?
  • Hopefully Kelly realizes it soon. Eazy. Spotella has stated pretty much the same thing that we have and GG flat out typed that he's all for the Eagles losing so they can get a shot at one of the top QBs next year while also moving on from Vick. I've heard more callers on WIP leaning towards one of the young guns. We'll see what happens. Maybe if he loses the battle Vick talks to Kelly and tells him he would prefer to be let go than back up...how could he refuse that?...why would he want to?
  • The ASSumption is they are tanking the season if they play the young kids, but the reality is we are tanking the season if week one Vick is the one taking snaps. We all know that's a bridge to nowhere.
  • It has to be about more than THIS season especially with a new head coach in year one and that is why Foles or Barkley should be getting the snaps in week one in my opinion...I just wish Kelly realized that months ago. Maybe after watching Vick he realizes that now. It can't bode well for Vick that he hasn't gotten the nod yet...I think he and at least two barkers assumed that would have happened by the end of June.
