Cincinnati Reds hire Bryan Price as manager We speculated that he was the front runner, both on the website and the radio show. Now it appears that Bryan Price, the Reds former pitching coach, will become their next manager. According to reports, the Reds will announce Price as the 61st manager in team history on Tuesday afternoon at Great American Ballpark. Price replaces Dusty Baker, who spent six seasons as Reds skipper, advancing to the playoffs in three of those six seasons. While many speculated the likes of Barry Larkin, Paul O’Neil, and even Tony LaRussa as candidates, it is believed that the only two interviewees were Price and former big league skipper Jim Riggleman, who spent the 2013 season as the Louisville Bats’ manager, the Triple-A affiliate. Price has been the Reds pitching coach since 2010 and had stints with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks in the same position prior to coming to Cincinnati. Year after year, the Reds have featured one of the best staffs in the league and Price was a hot commodity throughout baseball. If he was not promoted to manager, many believed that he would not return as pitching coach in 2014. Price takes his new position with a lot of pressure. In fact, no Reds manager in recent history has taken over with so much pressure to win. Baker took the Reds to the playoffs in three of his six seasons, including three of his last four, and was let go. In all actuality, when Baker was let go by Reds management, he was penalized for his own success. But, after appearing in the postseason in three of the last four seasons, both Reds management and Reds fans are eager for more. And it will be Price’s job to deliver. And he is in an excellent position to succeed as the Reds bring back the majority of their team next year. Now that they have a new manager, it’s time to figure out what to do with Shin-Soo Choo. On a side note, the Reds now need a new pitching coach and I can think of no one better than longtime Triple-A pitching coach, Ted Power. Power is familiar with the majority of the Reds’ staff and is one of the best in the business. He was a candidate for the position in 2010, prior to the Reds selecting Price for the job. As the Bats’ former Media Relations Director, nothing would make me more excited than to see Power get that big league gig.
