It Only Gets Better Lance Easley is known to most of NFL-nation as the guy who became infamous for a call that gave the Seattle Seahawks a win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football early on during the 2012 season. But now, at least to Richard Sherman and fans of the Seahawks, he is known as an umpire at a local charity game. That’s right, folks, the Sherminators antics continue. In his latest move of, well, let’s just say hilariousness, Sherman has hired Easley to ump his charity softball game on July 7 at Cheney Field. A call that would also help to bring back the replacement refs, what was a low scoring contest became the talk of the world when Russell Wilson heaved up a pass to the end zone with time expiring, hoping to give his Seahawks a crucial win. Five Packers in the area, just Golden Tate and Charly Martin were there for the Seahawks. Pushing away one defender in a move that is generally called offensive pass interference but is rarely flagged on last-ditch efforts, Tate jumped up and found himself in a battle with M.D. Jennings for the ball. Both clearly getting their hands to the ball, they fell to the ground still wrestling for the possession, with it looking as though the football was closer to the body of Jennings. Tate’s now infamous catch (Ric Tapia/NFL) And that is when the replacement refs officially lost their jobs. One ref (Derrick Rhone-Dunn) coming over and waving his arms in the air to signal a timeout, Easley made the infamous call, raising his arms in the air to signal a touchdown and send the entire northwest into a frenzy of excitement and joy. Though the play was reviewed by replay official Howard Slavin, there was not adequate evidence to overturn the call and the Seahawks walked away with a shocking victory. The NFL then issued a statement noting that Tate should have been called for pass interference but also supported the call to rule the play a touchdown in favor of Seattle. And this is where we stand today, with a 14-12 win over the Green Bay Packers, a controversy that will go down in regular season NFL history, and a completely hilarious move by Seattle favorite Richard Sherman that puts Easley as an umpire at his charity softball game. As mentioned previously, Sherman’s “The Richard Sherman Celebrity Softball Game” will take place on July 7 at 12pm at Cheney Stadium. Aside from current and past Seahawks, the game will also bring together local and national celebrities while giving fans the chance play alongside them or just catch the game. While all roster spots are sold out (going for $1,395 per spot), there are still two available spots for bat boys that are currently being bid on with bidding starting at $121 and the spots going to the highest bidder. A portion of the event proceeds will go to Blank Coverage, The Richard Sherman Family Foundation and Homes for Heroes. Keep doing what you do, Sherman.
