The Patriots entered the spring with what seemed to be an unfair surplus at the tight end position.
At the top of the depth chart sat Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, two of the best tight ends the NFL had to offer. Jake Ballard, Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui, all former NFL starters, were set to compete for the reserve spots. A lot can change in four short months.
Now, Hoomanawanui may be the only player left of that group of five to actually suit up in Week 1 against Buffalo. Gronkowski is still hurt, Hernandez is in jail and Fells and Ballard have been released. Zach Sudfeld sits atop the depth chart now with fullback/H-back James Develin also in the mix.
But the Patriots’ willingness to cut ties with two proven veteran tight ends bodes well for Gronkowski’s health. As I said on TA, Pats leaning towards moving Gronkowski to 53-man roster on Saturday. Still not likely back before at least late Septemeber.
It's been a rough offseason in New England to say the least, but now it seems they may get back their superstar tight end sooner than they initially thought.
Earlier this preseason, it became clear that New England
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski wouldn’t start the regular season healthy.
With that known, the questions began centering on how much time the All-Pro
would miss. It sounds like the Patriots expect Gronkowski to miss less than six
weeks of the regular season, as Albert Breer of NFL.com reports that New
England is leaning...
The Patriots will carry tight end Rob Gronkowski on their active
53-man roster, FOX Sports NFL Insider Mike Garafolo confirms.
The Patriots have made two more notable cuts today, releasing tight ends Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells, neither of whom made much of an impact during their time with the Patriots.
Ballard never seemed to fully recover from his knee injury during his time in New England
Originally thought to contribute in the absence of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, neither produced very...

Patriots will carry TE Rob Gronkowski on their 53-man roster and not place him on PUP, per league sources.
