From 2009-2011 (during which time Theo Epstein was the Red Sox GM) Daniel Bard was one of the best set up men in baseball.   And then he mysteriously forgot how to find the plate.  Bard failed as a starter for Boston in 2012, then responded terribly to being demoted to AAA. With Pawtucket he walked 29 batters (and hit another 10) in just 32 innings, with an ERA of 7.03.  This year in AA he gave up 17 walks, 13 hits, and 11 runs over a span of  just 12.2 innings.   Last week in the Gulf Coast League (rookie level ball below single A) Bard hit rock bottom when he walked 5 hitters in two thirds of an inning, while also letting two runs score on wild pitches.  On Sunday the Red Sox cut Bard from their roster.  Yesterday Theo Epstein (now running the Cubs) decided to claim him off waivers for Chicago. Chicago Cubs Acquire Daniel Bard From Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox announced on Wednesday afternoon that former reliever and starting pitcher, Daniel Bard, was claimed off of unconditional waivers by the Chicago Cubs. Bard had been working to convert himself back into a reliever since the Red Sox experimented with him in the starting rotation in 2012. It seems as though all of Bard’s problems started when he joined the starting rotation...

Cubs would do well to give Scott Baker September innings

For Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Scott Baker, the 2013 season has not produced much promise. After missing all of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery, Baker and the Cubs had anticipated that he pitch in Wrigley Field by this year's All-Star break. That obviously did not happen. Baker may not pitch at all in 2013 either even though the rosters have expanded for the September stretch...

Scott Baker to make Cubs debut on Sunday

Scott Baker will make his debut for the Chicago Cubs on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Baker, 31, signed a $5.5 million deal prior to the 2013 season but has not pitched at the big league level yet. Baker Tommy John surgery on his elbow last season but the Cubs were hopeful he would be ready to contribute when the season started. Instead Baker had a series of set backs before...

Theo Epstein Reunites With His Former Reliever Daniel Bard

(Photo/CSSNE) The Chicago Cubs have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. To make room for the reliever, outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment by the Cubs. Bard will be reunited with his former General Manager and current Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein from their time together with the Red Sox organization. The former top...

Murphy's two-run HR gives Cubs 9-7 win over Marlins

Donnie Murphy hit the go-ahead two-run homer while Dioner Navarro homered and drove in three runs as host Chicago salvaged the finale of a three-game set against Miami. The Cubs trailed by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh before Navarro singled home two runs and Murphy greeted Ryan Webb (2-6) with the decisive blast to left. Starlin Castro added a run-scoring double...

Cubs hit 4 HRs, power past Marlins 9-7 to avoid sweep

CHICAGO (AP) -- Donnie Murphy homered to cap a four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs connected four times Wednesday to beat the Miami Marlins 9-7. Murphy's two-run shot put the Cubs ahead 8-7. Starlin Castro, Dioner Navarro and Ryan Sweeney each added solo home runs for Chicago. The Cubs avoided a sweep and prevented the Marlins from winning four straight...

Cubs claim Bard; RSL Poll: Who's to blame for Daniel Bard?

The Chicago Cubs announced Wednesday that they have claimed pitcher Daniel Bard off waivers from the Red Sox. Boston's former top-100 prospect was designated for assignment on Sunday. Bard was a dominant late-inning reliever in 2010, but didn't respond well when the team attempted to convert him into a starter in 2012. Red Sox Life covered the "Curious Case of...

Cubs Claim Daniel Bard Off Waivers Ending Reliever’s Up-and-Down Red Sox Career

It is now official: Daniel Bard is no longer a member of the Boston Red Sox. His new home may not come as much of a surprise. The right-hander was designated for assigment earlier this week by the Red Sox, and he was claimed off waivers Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs of all teams. That will give Bard a chance to reunite with former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein who currently...

Illini QB Aaron Bailey: a new favorite Illinois football topic

The talk from Illini Nation around QB Aaron Bailey reminds me of the talk from Chicago Cubs Nation surrounding Javier Baez. Or Albert Almora. Or (insert another Cubs blue chip Minor League prospect’s name here). It’s the same sentiment- accepting that losing, and extreme losing at that, is inevitable in the present. Therefore, instead look to the future and focus on the can...

Cubs Owner Doesn’t see Increase in Spending anytime Soon

When you’re 59-80 entering the last month of the MLB regular season, there are a lot of questions regarding the direction of your franchise. The Chicago Cubs haven’t been relevant in a very long time, so changes this off-season might be only natural for fans of the team to expect. But owner Tom Ricketts was […]
