Time off could be good for middling Lions QB Two years ago, losing Travis Lulay would have been viewed as a deathblow to the hopes of the BC Lions, but in 2013, it could be a blessing in disguise. Whether it’s CFL defenses figuring him out, a few too many miles on the tires or a lack of help from both the line and his receiving corps, it’s been a year to mostly forget for Travis Lulay. He hasn’t been horrible, but he’s not the Most Outstanding Player candidate he was in 2011, and taking a week off might not be the worst thing in the world for a Lions team seemingly stuck in third place. Like so many other times this year, it was the Lions’ defense that won the game for BC against the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday. Aside from a scintillating 58-yard pass that Lulay tossed to Courtney Taylor, there was pretty much more bad than good from No. 14 against the Als. The BC Lions might be better off resting Travis Lulay before the playoffs. Lulay threw three picks and fumbled the ball once, and it was thanks to the Lions’ D that Montreal failed to capitalize on those mistakes. He then banged up his shoulder late in the game while scrambling, but Thomas DeMarco stepped in and looked pretty good in his limited action. Giving DeMarco — or newly acquired Buck Pierce – a start or two wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Thomas DeMarco was fine against the Als, leading a 47-yard touchdown drive, and he looked completely comfortable running the offense. Another benefit to giving Lulay a rest is that it could jump-start the team’s rushing game. Andrew Harris had one of his best games of the season on the ground with 68 yards rushing on 13 carries, and I’d like to see him get a few more opportunities if Lulay is out for any period of time. I think Lulay resting could also be a great opportunity for him to get together with Buck Pierce and try to work something new into his repertoire. Pierce has been around the CFL for years, he knows the tricks of the trades and he knows CFL defences. Lulay could use this time to pick the vet’s brain (or what’s left of it after all the concussions) and try to work his way out of this mini-slump he’s been mired in for most of 2013. Having Lulay heal up for the playoffs is another silver lining to the injury. The Lions play in Regina (never easy) and then Winnipeg, so getting Lulay fresh for the next home date wouldn’t be the worst option. The Bombers are a complete joke, so unless DeMarco completely flops against the Riders, it would be a good chance for him to get in some reps and let Lulay recover. The playoffs are all that matter, and the Lions have all but clinched a spot. It’s now a matter of trying their best to stay healthy, grab a home playoff date and allow their No. 1 quarterback to round himself back into form. The games always seem to matter more in the fall, and the Lions will have their hands full in the coming weeks, either with or without Lulay. CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT OUR B.C.
