With the start of the season right around the corner, Terps Insider continues our player-by-player breakdown of the 2011-2012 Maryland Terrapins. Today: Sean Mosley

Sean Mosley came to Maryland as arguably the most highly touted freshmen out of Baltimore to don a Terps uniform since Keith Booth. After all, Mosley finished his prep career as the second all-time leading scorer in Maryland high school history. And Sean Mosley lived up to the hype early on in his career. He came in as a freshman and put up a respectable 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Mosley took a huge leap forward as a sophomore, starting all 32 games for the Terps. In his second season, Mosley averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Mosley was one of the most efficient players offensively in the ACC, shooting 51 percent from the field, including 38.9 percent from beyond the three-point arc. He was outstanding from the free throw line as well, making over 81 percent of his attempts. Mosley, along with Greivis Vasquez, helped lead Maryland to the regular season ACC title.

It was a different story for Mosley last season. With Greivis Vasquez gone the Terps struggled at the point guard position and Mosley had a hard time finding his own shot. His numbers dipped across the board, including the number of minutes player per game. His three-point percentage dropped all the way down to 26.9 percent and his turnovers increased. Needless to say it was probably a season Sean Mosley would like to forget.

Mosley is now the lone four-year senior on a team that features only 9 scholarship players. New head coach Mark Turgeon has placed a newfound faith in the senior from Baltimore and it appears to be paying off. Mosley looks comfortable out on the floor this year and seems to have found his 2009-2010 form with his jumper. But more important that Mosley’s numbers this season will be his leadership. Leadership was a quality that many of last year’s seniors seemed to lack and if Mosley can be the vocal leader for this year’s team it will go a long way in aiding the development of a young squad.

Best-case: Sean Mosley is a vocal leader both on and off the court and returns to his sophomore season form. He is more than capable of scoring in double-digits and pulling down 5 to 10 rebounds a game. If he can find his form from three-point range and not turn the ball over he can be one of the best players in the ACC. He is Maryland’s Jack of all trades.

Worst-case: Mosley’s junior season struggles continue. He continues to struggle knocking down long range shots and turns the ball over.

Quotable: “I don’t care where we’re ranked, at the end of the day it’s where you finish. A lot of teams that are underdogs usually finish on the top, like my freshman and sophomore year. Ever since I’ve been at Maryland, we were always an underdog, but we’ve found some way to get through and use it as motivation to work hard each and every day at practice.” – Sean Mosley at ACC Media Day

Turgeon Wins Debut at Maryland vs UNCW

Maryland let UNC-Wilmington hang around most of the game until putting them away with free throws in the closing moments. Relying mostly on solid defense, free throws and rebounding it wasn't a visually pleasing contest. The offense was very uneven, particularly in the 1st half, and it is clear the team will continue to struggle with a lack of ball handlers on the roster...
