NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 20: Coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats talks to his team during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the New Orleans Arena on March 20, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Dave Martin/Getty Images)
It always seems like I’m writing about recruiting classes way too soon. Just when I start to learn the destinations for some of the 2014 prospects, the 2015 class starts to take shape. John Calipari must feel my pain, but I’d venture to say he enjoys the grind a little more than me. His immense success on the recruiting trail has already brought him one national championship, and now he’s eyeing another in 2014. On Thursday, Calipari had his first 2016 recruit on campus in local product Quentin Goodin. Goodin is a 6-foot-3 point guard from Taylor County (KY), who is ranked the N0. 7 point guard and 29th best player in the state of Kentucky for 2016 according to 247sports. He is arguably the best high school player in the state, regardless of class. He may be listed as a point guard, but he will more than likely be a combination guard on the next level. He’s too good of a scorer to be just a point guard, and has a high basketball IQ for his age. The visit was the first time Goodin had ever been able to speak with the coaching staff and take in the campus at UK. He recapped his visit by saying it was “amazing”. With John Calipari’s recruiting tactics, Goodin may not see an offer from the Wildcats for a very long while. That will not hurt Kentucky in the long run due to the staff being genuine in their interest. If Goodin was not good enough to play for Kentucky, he would not have been visiting. Only two players in the 2016 class have received offers from John Calipari. 5-star power forward Harry Giles and 5-star small forward Jayson Tatum hold those early offers. Goodin has plenty of suitors lined up already, and plenty of schools expressing interest.  Indiana, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and West Virginia have already offered. Alabama, Florida State, Illinois, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan, Texas and Wake Forest have all expressed interest. Goodin averages 16 points and almost five rebounds a game for his Taylor County (KY) Cardinals. He earned All-Fifth Region honors last season, despite his team finishing at 16-16. He has also been invited to Colorado Springs on October 4-5 to participate in a USA Basketball Developmental National Team mini-camp. He’ll be one of 35 prospects training for a shot at the 2014 FIBA 17-and-under World Championships.
