The No. 1/5 Florida Gators couldn’t put together much offense in a 5-3 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night. The Gators only managed six hits in the loss while they struck out seven times. It was an offensive performance to forget as Florida fell behind early and couldn’t find the lead. Junior starting pitcher Brian Johnson managed seven solid innings, but got the loss after given up four runs. Johnson fell to 5-2 on the season from the mound, but did manage to go 2-for-4 at the plate. Unfortunately, the eight other Florida batters only totaled four additional hits. With the loss, the Gators fall to 30-9 (10-7 SEC) while the Bulldogs improve to 24-16 (8-9 SEC). The two will meet agains at 3:00pm on Sunday in the series finale. Florida needs a win on Sunday to hold on hope on maintaining their top ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll. Another loss may not only drop them from the top spot, but it may drop them out of the top five of the Baseball America Top 25 Rankings.
