Andrew Nicholson and St. Bonaventure gave #22 Illinois all they could handle, unfortunately for the Bonnies, it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Fighting Illini 48-43 on Wednesday night.

The game was a low scoring defensive battle from the get-go as both teams struggled to get their offense going shooting under 36% on the night.

St. Bonaventure led throughout the game as they entered halftime up 26-24 and increased their lead to as many as nine points in the second half.

However, the Bonnies couldn’t hold onto the lead late once Illinois started driving and attacking their defense.

Brandon Paul was key in the Illini’s late comeback scoring on multiple layups late in the game.

Paul finished with 17 points and led Illinois in scoring.

Also finishing with 17 points was Andrew Nicholson who just so happened to lead the Bonnies in scoring.

Despite the loss, St. Bonaventure out-shot Illinois (35.4%- 31.9%) and out-rebounded the Illini by 10.

The loss will go down as a very disappointing loss in the Bonnies season as it appeared as though they were headed to victory before blowing the game late.

Beating a top 25 team on the road would’ve been a very nice win for the Bonnies resume, unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be on this night.

St. Bonaventure now falls to 3-4 with the loss and next plays on December 10th when they take on Canisius.

St. Bonaventure Coach Invokes Cap’n Crunch When Describing Schedule

St. Bonaventure Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt suffered a tough loss at #22 Illinois last night.
