Tuesday night the referees of the South Florida against Florida Gulf Coast game looked like they screwed up royally. The game itself was great, it went into double overtime and South Florida won the game with a score of 68-66. With 0.3 seconds left on the clock, Jamil Jones threw a very nice full court pass to Chase Fieler and he made a shot tie the game at 68 and the officials waived off the shot. Fieler clearly got the shot off before time expired but there is a rule that says you cannot shoot a shot if the clock shows less than one second on the clock.   FGCU Miracle Pass vs. USF (Jamail Jones To Chase Fieler) Doesn’t Count: http://t.co/3QDQzTqn4y via @youtube — Jeff Stephens (@JOnTheSidelines) December 18, 2013   In any period, when the game clock displays 10ths of seconds and play is to be resumed by a throw-in or a free throw when 3/10 (.3) of a second or less remains on the game clock, a player may not gain possession of the ball and try for a field goal. Such player can only score a field goal by means of a tap of a pass or of a missed free throw.    Rule 5, Sec. 1 Art. 18. To be honest, I would not even call what Chase Fieler did a shot. His feet were off the ground when he got the ball. It was truly the equivalent of what Derrick Fisher did to the Spurs some years back. It was a horrible call but by the letter of the law, I guess it is the right call. If I were a FGCU player, I would be pissed! The referee even informed Coach Joe Dooley of the rule during the timeout so I am sure he told his team that. Overall, Florida Gulf Coast just got a raw deal. The rule is what it is but I differ in the belief that Chase Fieler actually took a shot. It was a great game, both teams competed very hard but in the end, only one team can win.   Joe Dooley and FGCU were pretty much robbed.
