Despite being out with an ACL injury, the SEC coaches named Nerlens Noel SEC Freshman of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year. Noel becomes the 5th Kentucky player to win the award in the past 6 years. Anthony Davis (2012), Terrence Jones (2011), Demarcus Cousins (2010), and Patrick Patterson (2008) were the others. His 106 blocks rank 2nd all-time among UK freshman, and his 50 steals rank 5th all-time among UK freshman. Noel also made the All-SEC, All-Defensive, and All-Freshman SEC teams. Even before the conference awards were handed out, Noel had already racked up a couple of other awards. He was named to the District IV all-district team voted on by the United States Basketball Writer’s Association, and the SEC Community Service Team for giving over 100 hours of community service during the season. Kyle Wiltjer was named SEC’s 6th Man of the Year, averaging 10.5 points and 4.3 rebounds off of the bench. Former Kentucky Wildcat Darius Miller was the recipient of the award last season.
