wvusports.com We’re starting to get some insight into why the 2012-2013 West Virginia men’s basketball team had a disappointing season. The Mountaineers were unable to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the NIT and the CBI with a 13-19 record overall and abysmal 6-12 Big 12 Conference mark. West Virginia fell in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament to Texas Tech as well. Senior forward/center Deniz Kilicli went out of his way to state the reason for West Virginia’s problems this year. In an exclusive interview with WVU reporter Bob Hertzel and a Beckley, W.Va., TV station (WOAY), Kilicli said that this team didn’t work as hard as some of the others that Bob Huggins has coached in the past. Kilicli went on to say that wearing a WVU uniform is an honor, and playing for the state is something every Mountaineer should take pride in. The big-bearded senior from Turkey didn’t mention any names in the interview, but he did say there were people on the squad who ‘didn’t want to win’ and were ‘prima donnas.’ Kilicli said that players would laugh at Huggins’ inspirational stories, and they wouldn’t care for practice — as practice often turned into people quitting and the common shouting match. Now, Kilicli is used to winning. Let’s not forget that he was a member of the Big East Championship/Final Four team of three years ago. In his first season, Kilicli was part of one of the more memorable runs in school history. In fact, the Turk never had a losing season in his career. In two consecutive years, Kilicli had won 33 games as a youth ball player. While this season was as frustrating to Kilicli as any other member of the team, who or what was really to blame? The Kilicli interview by Bob Hertzel is a must read, very sad but honest.
