Four players scored in double-figures for #23 Iowa and the bench nearly outperformed the starters en route to a ho-hum 83-66 victory over Drake in Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday. Melsahn Basabe led Iowa with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Devyn Marble (6 boards) and Peter Jok (7 boards) had 14 points apiece and Jarrod Uthoff added 13 for Iowa, who improved to 9-1 on the year. 39 of Iowa’s 83 points came from the bench, including 24 of their 49 first half points, a trend we’ve seen all year as Iowa’s bench is one of the most productive in the nation. Jok, Basabe and Uthoff all came off the bench in this game. Adam Woodbury had one of his better games this season, scoring six points and grabbing six boards in 18 minutes. The Hawkeyes scored 42 points in the paint and had 29 second chance points, one of the big differences in the contest as Drake had eight three-point baskets in the first half to just one for Iowa. Iowa was 3-18 from three, their worst shooting night from range in the last two weeks as they had been moving in the right direction in that department. Drake was a solid opponent for Iowa as it relates to a resume stuffer. No, people won’t be pointing to this game as any sort of program statement but Drake was ranked 86th in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings before the game and had a lofty RPI. Each of those ratings systems is incomplete this time of year but winning a neutral contest against a top 100 team is far better than winning a road game against a team rated in the 300′s…like what Iowa faces on Tuesday night in Fairleigh-Dickinson (322 as of Saturday night). The Fairleigh-Dickinson game will tip off a 6pm and can be seen on the BTN. Then it’s Iowa at Iowa State on Friday night, where both teams will be ranked and the environment should be insane, perhaps the most raucous Iowa will face all season long.
