Hokies Break Nine Game Losing Streak with 80-70 Win The Nation's scoring leader Erik Green leads Virginia Tech with 26 points in Hokies win over Florida State For the first time since January 19th the Hokies pulled out a win. Erik Green lead the way, like always, with 26 points in a 80-70 victory over ACC opponent Florida State. The win snapped a nine game losing streak for the Hokies and ensures that Tech will avoid only the second losing season in their history at home in Cassel Coliseum. The win put the Hokies at 12-15 on the season and 3-11 in ACC play. The Hokies opened the game slowly and trailed most of the first half. The momentum swung the Hokies way though with 2:55 left in the first half when there was a technical foul called on Florida State bench. Green hit both free throws to tie the game and walk-on Christian Beyer made a lay-up on the following possession to take the lead and the Hokies never looked back. After the strong finish to the first half the Hokies opened the second half on a 14-3 run which gave them a thirteen point lead which was their largest of the game. Tech sealed the deal hitting 17 or their final 18 free throw attempts. If Virginia Tech was able to play this well throughout their ACC schedule they could easily have three to five more games. In tonight’s game Virginia Tech played better defense, had a higher free throw percentage and provided support for Eric Green. Four players ended the game with eight or more points, including CJ Barksdale’s career high 17 points. In many games during Tech’s losing streak Erik Green would be the only player with double figure points. Virginia Tech was also able to shoot 83% from the free throw line. After a strong start to the season Virginia Tech has struggled in ACC play, but with the win tonight It brought some hope to a team and fan base desperately that needed it. While it is too late for the Hokies this season a win will ease the tension around the team and hopefully lead to a few more end of the season wins.
