Indiana Claims First Big Ten Title in 20 Years, Looks Forward to Big 10 TourneyLosing a game with a missed layup is something no basketball player wants to endure. But that’s what happened to Michigan’s Trey Burke on Sunday in a loss to AP number 2 Indiana, who claimed their first outright Big Ten title in 20 years. In a game that came down to the last few seconds layups became a major factor.  Indiana’s Cody Zeller put in a layup with just over 13 seconds left in the game to put the Hoosiers up 72-71.  Michigan tried to respond quickly with Burke slicing his way to the basket almost unopposed, only to see his layup attempt to win the game fail.  Burke was almost unopposed because Zeller was in his way. From bleacherreport.com Zeller played an outstanding game contributing 25 points and 10 rebounds along with his game winning bucket.  After scoring the go ahead layup, Zeller sprinted down the floor in time to cause a slight disruption in Burke’s shot. It was a tight game down the stretch with several ties and lead changes, and it’s safe to say most people probably thought Burke’s final attempt was going to go in.  He also had a good game scoring 20 points, with 15 of those points coming from behind the three-point line.  When someone is shooting that well it’s almost expected they will come through in crunch time. But Zeller made sure that Burke didn’t come through. “I just wanted to be aggressive,” Zeller said. “It seemed like the ball was on the rim forever.  He [Burke] is a great player, we just tried to make it tough on him.” Zeller also said it means a lot for Indiana to capture the outright Big Ten title after some tough years for the program. Indiana’s player of the year candidate Victor Oladipo contributed 14 points and a career high 13 rebounds while Michigan’s other star Tim Hardaway Jr. added 11 points for the Wolverines. The Hoosiers can’t celebrate their accomplishments for long though.  The Big Ten tournament starts Thursday on the 14th, and Indiana, the one seed, will play the winner of Illinois and Minnesota on Friday. Everyone will expect Indiana to win the tournament, but the Hoosiers have already lost to both Illinois and Minnesota previously this year.  College basketball fan and former ESPN intern Julius Sanders said that the Hoosiers didn’t play their best game in either of those losses and that he believes Indiana is ready to play out the stretch. While that may be true, Indiana shouldn’t get to comfortable.  An early loss in the Big Ten tournament could knock Indiana out of a one seed in the NCAA tournament with teams like Gonzaga, Miami, Kansas, Louisville and Georgetown near the top of the rankings.  Don’t forget about Michigan either, who is ranked sixth in the new AP poll. If the Hoosiers can keep everything together and play the basketball they know how to play, it will be interesting to see how far they go in not just the Big Ten tournament but the NCAA tournament as well.
