NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 20: Coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats talks to his team during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the New Orleans Arena on March 20, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Dave Martin/Getty Images)
It seems as if there is something in the water at the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats have been on an absolute tear in recruiting lately — but not just in basketball. While the hoops program is one of the most iconic ones in the country and has always recruited well, it’s no secret that Kentucky has one of the worst football programs in the SEC, and is perhaps average at best nationally. But after Mark Stoops has reeled in five 2014 recruits in the past week, fans have been wondering what is convincing top players to pick Kentucky in every sport. John Calipari took to Twitter today and offered his opinion: You want to know why players are picking Kentucky? Here’s what I think: Their families trust us with their child. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 15, 2013 They know we have their child’s interest on the forefront of our minds. It’s players first. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 15, 2013 Lastly, we’re not trying to recruit kids to our style of play. We’re recruiting kids to try to do everything we can to make them better. — John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) June 15, 2013 Calipari may or may not be right in this regard, but his comments naturally became a target on Twitter — after all, Calipari has been caught on tape cheating in the past, and many fans consider him a less than honest coach. Here are some responses from college basketball fans: @UKCoachCalipari Why did you run Harrow off them? Isn’t he a young man in need of passion & guidance? — Scott Johnson (@rsj311) June 15, 2013 @UKCoachCalipari The Dorms they live in with a made to order Chef does not hurt you in recruiting either… — 1979HOG (@JarredLinam) June 15, 2013 @UKCoachCalipari @RazorbackZJ that’s a ******* laugh, it’s because they trust your bagmen you greasy headed insignificant **** — ASSHOLE (@trollinhogfan) June 15, 2013 @UKCoachCalipari no education and and up on a 30 for 30 episode. #broke — Only in a ZJ™ (@RazorbackZJ) June 15, 2013 For 1 semester. Very impressive indeed. RT @UKCoachCalipari: They know we’re about education. — Honest UK Fan (@HonestUKfan) June 15, 2013 @UKCoachCalipari education my ass man. Just save it John. — Elwyn Phillips Rowan (@RowNation48) June 15, 2013 “@UKCoachCalipari: They know we’re about education and they know we’re going to do what we say.” Haha education is the reason? Not payroll? — Alec Rohr (@ARRohr) June 15, 2013
