2013-14 Kansas Jayhawks are No.4 in the Preseason Polls
2013 Record: 31-6 , 14-4 in the Big XII
2013 Postseason: Loss in the Sweet 16 to Michigan
Key Losses: Elijah Johnson, Ben McLemore, Travis Releford, Jeff Withey
Returning Stars: Peryy Ellis
Key Additions: Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, Wayne Selden, Brannen Greene, Hunter Mickelson, Tarik Black
2013-14 Outlook: Rock Chalk Jayhawk is coming back fully retooled and reloaded for this 2013-14 season and Bill Self has his biggest recruit ever, with Andrew Wiggins. The 6’8 210 pound freshman from Toronto is a once in a decade prospect that everyone will watching this season. The long, athletic and speedy forward/guard combo is a freak of nature and an instant 20 point a night guy. You will hear about Wiggins every night with good cause but in order for this to make a legit championship run Wiggins is going to need help a la Carmelo Anthony at Cuse’ when they went on to win the title. Unlike his on court rival Jabari Parker of Duke, Wiggins doesn’t have the luxury of the Jayhawks returning anyone with big time minutes or veterans in this lockeroom. The players that need to help him the most Tarik Black and Wayne Selden who are both newcomers themselves. Selden is an explosive combo guard who will replace Ben McLemore who left for the NBA Draft. Black is a transfer from Memphis but who will be the sixth man at the 4 and 5 next to Wiggins and they need him to rebound and defend effectively and early on. Joel Embiid another newcomer is needed to round out the front court in order from them to retain there BIG XII title.
Sophomore power forward Perry Ellis will be the leader and starter that needs to improve the most, Ellis showed flashes but will need to finally put it all together this season for KU. Kansas Univ has been a No. 1 regional seed five times in the past seven seasons and this year it looks like they’ll get another one but Self wants another National Title. The frontcourt is fine but what will define this squad is the backcourt that loss McLemore, Releford and Johnson those three were one of the best backcourts in the country and will be replaced by Frank Mason, Naadir Tharpe and Conner Frankamp. Frankamp and Mason will need to get off tho great starts and gradually improve over time, they are elite freshman but not ready for big time just yet. Tharpe and true freshman Brannen Greene will be important in the rotation as well, Greene is a streaky shooter but can be deadly from downtown. The Georgia native can play the role of Elijah Johnson through his years at Kansas.
2013 Prediction: Kansas fans are going to reach the Final Four barley but they’ll make it. Wiggins will make the most of his 365 days in college basketball and his upside is crazy and insanely good. Embiid isn’t Whitey in the paint but he is better than most centers in the nation and Self’s Jayhawks look like a potential juggernaut
