Andrew Wiggins may have been a virtual non-factor for Kansas in this game, but nevertheless, the Jayhawks defeated the Sooners 90-83. This was the Big 12 opener for Kansas and ended up being their first road win of the season. The frantic pace started from the tip off. Kansas (10-4, 1-0 Big 12) led at halftime by a score of 50-44. Wayne Selden sparked the Jayhawks with several three-pointers early in the game. He finished with a season high 24 points and shot 5-10 from beyond the arc. Veteran Perry Ellis delivered 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Jayhawks. The Sooner defense appeared to be weak in the paint as Kansas scored repeatedly on layups and drives to the basket. The remaining Kansas big men, Joel Embiid, Tarik Black, and Jamari Traylor, combined for 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Andrew Wiggins seemed to force several ill-advised shots in the game. Wiggins shot 2-9 from the field and totaled just 9 points, but did manage to grab 6 rebounds. Kansas led most of the game and Oklahoma failed to capitalize on a late turnover by the Jayhawks. Kansas sealed the victory late with free throws from Naadir Tharpe. Aside from a solid 18 point performance from Buddy Hield, the Oklahoma Sooner offense appeared to be a one-man show. But it was a great show. Cameron Clark led all scorers with 32 points and shot 56% from the field in addition to a 12-16 performance at the free throw line. Whenever the Sooners appeared the be falling out of the game, Clark hit the big shot. Unfortunately, his offense was not enough. The other Oklahoma starters combined to shoot 33% from the field, but also shot an impressive 15-16 from the charity stripe. The Sooners (12-3, 1-1 Big 12) suffered their second straight loss at home this season. They will have a chance to end that streak against Iowa State on Saturday. The Jayhawks meanwhile, looked to have gained confidence after a puzzling loss at home to San Diego State the previous week. Kansas now begins another brutal part of their schedule. This stretch includes four straight games against ranked opponents. They start Saturday in Lawrence against #25 Kansas State who is 2-0 in Big 12 play.
