Peyton Siva joined the 1,000 point club as Louisville beat South Florida 64-38.
The game was never really close from the start as Louisville took control early and never relented. Peyton Siva was on a mission and was almost unconscious from beyond the arch for a stretch in the first half. Siva was 7 for 11 for 17 points. The points took away from his facilitating to teammates; he finished with only 1 assist.
Russ Smith got in trouble early with Pitino and never seemed to climb back out. Pitino was already somewhat annoyed with Russ after his performance against Seton Hall and was seen barking at him on the bench on multiple occasions. Smith finished with single digit points (8) for the first time all season. In what shouldn’t be a surprise to many, Smith only played 18 minutes but got off more shots than anyone on the team….typical Russ Smith stat.
Gorgui Dieng had a double-double consisting of 12 points and 16 rebounds. He seemed to be back to his old self after his time out of commission. Chane Behanan barely missed a double-double as he had 7 points and 12 rebounds. Most of his rebounds came on one play in which he had 3 consecutive offensive rebounds.
Montrezl Harrell got his first start in his carreer. If you were watching the game, you could tell that Harrell made a big contribution but when looking at the stats, it seems like he was a non factor with only 2 points and 4 rebounds. Also he missed a dunk that Russ Smith gave up….giving more of a reason for Russ Smith to never pass the ball.
Louisville plays Connecticut on Monday and Syracuse on Saturday. It is set up to be a huge week for basketball in Louisville.
