University of Maryland men’s basketball head coach Mark Turgeon announced on Tuesday that Shaquille Cleare, Nick Faust and Roddy Peters have been granted permission to transfer. “I really enjoyed coaching Nick, Shaq and Roddy,” Turgeon said. “It is unfortunate that they will no longer be a part of the program. I wish them the very best in their future endeavors.” Faust, a rising senior, was the last tie to the Gary Williams era. Faust started 66 of 102 games over three seasons, averaging 9.3 points and 3.8 rebounds. Cleare and Peters were both top-100 players nationally in high school, but had become role players, often not getting meaningful minutes. All three players will have to sit out one season if they transfer to a Division I school. Maryland had no seniors on the 2013-’14 roster, but scholarships are now available. One big one was filled this week with one of the top big men in the entire class. Breaking news from http://t.co/CL4vgvygmq: Heralded 2014 7-footer Michal Cekovsky has committed to the #Terps: http://t.co/cdTokQF04U — Jeff Ermann (@insidemdsports) April 7, 2014 Michal Cekovsky is a 7 Footer from Slovakia. 247sports ranks him the sixth best power forward and the 39th player overall. Cekovsky chose Maryland over Florida, Louisville, Arizona, Kansas and others. Cekovsky is skilled in the post, while having three point range and plenty of upside. The Terps now have a pair of seven footers in the class, as Cekovsky joins 7’1″ Trayvon Reed. The group is well represented on the perimeter, with McDonald’s All-American Melo Trimble and Dion Wiley at guard, along with swingman Jared Nickens. The addition of blue chip post players like Cekovsky and Reed, along with the return of Charles Mitchell, Evan Smotrycz and Damonte Dodd didn’t project many minutes for Cleare. Faust didn’t like his role of a defensive specialist, fighting for minutes with Dez Wells and Jake Layman, with Nickens added to the mix. Peters saw playing time diminish with a healthy Seth Allen and the arrival of Trimble and Wiley certainly didn’t spell more minutes. Maryland 2014 recruiting class is now ranked No. 10 nationally in the 247 Composite rankings. With the three departures, the Terrapins appear to have a scholarship or possibly two remaining. Rising senior Jon Graham transferred from Penn State this season, but it is unknown if he will remain on scholarship. In other news from College Park… The Terps will be playing Villanova in the 20th annual Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic Doubleheader in December. ESPN will carry both games from Madison Square Garden in New York. Indiana takes on Louisville in the other game. The appearance is the first in the V classic for Maryland. And men’s basketball held their annual post season awards banquet. Junior Dez Wells winning the Len Bias awards as the team’s Most Valuable Player.
